The Firm Resilience Function owns the identification and resilience for the Firm's key business services and coordinates operational resilience efforts across the Firm. Firm Resilience works with Legal and Compliance to interpret regulatory guidance on operational resilience and is responsible for advising Business Units on standards and implementation. The function also works with Regulatory Relations and the Business Units to review and respond to regulatory requests and prepare for regulatory exams touching on operational resilience.

As a member of our team, you will be in a unique position to interact with people and teams globally across different businesses and functions, working on topics that have a direct impact on the operational stability of the Firm.

Support the operation of the Firm Resilience Function including:

  • Support the development and maintenance of Firm Resilience framework, including policies, procedures and program plans

  • Stay up to date on relevant regulatory guidance and its application to Firm Resilience

  • Develop materials for regular and ad-hoc meetings with Firm Resilience and other relevant stakeholders, including Working Group and Committee meetings

  • Prepare meeting minutes (key discussion topics, decision and action items) and track status of action items following the meeting

  • Analyze and organize large sets of data in a manner that supports analysis of operational resilience

  • Maintain sufficient understanding of Firm Resilience strategy to recognize opportunities for continuous improvement

  • A successful candidate will be expected to become a subject matter expert, contribute to projects and initiatives, develop and implement process improvements and become a key point of contact for a wide range of internal stakeholders


  • 2-3 years of experience in reporting and analysis or related functions at large financial institutions

  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills, including experience creating written presentations.

  • Strong leadership and project management skills

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, including the ability to pivot data and summarize results

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, cross-functional and administrative skills

  • Accustomed to working in a fast-paced environment

  • Commitment to delivery of highest quality work product

The Director, Technology Resilience (Disaster Recovery) will play a crucial role to establish, maintain, test and measure enterprise technology resilience and disaster recovery programs. Technology resilience and disaster recovery are critical programs to ensure American Express Technology infrastructure and applications maintain acceptable service levels through, and beyond disruptions. This leader will drive strategic transformational work to overhaul current disaster recovery frameworks towards focus on sustained technical resilience. Establishing new standards and guidelines that focus on the criticality of technical architecture designs and recovery in support business processes and services based on criticality and risk levels. The success of this role involves driving results through extensive engagement and close collaboration with multiple partners including all of American Express Technology, Enterprise Resilience and Business Continuity Management, Operational Risk, Internal Audit Group, Second line oversight and external auditors and regulators. This leader should have a balance of four key qualities including: 1) a track record of strong leadership with the ability to transform existing practices into high performing teams, as evidenced by successful implementations of similar IT resilience capabilities in large corporations (preferable in the financial services or the technology industries), 2) demonstrated knowledge of the various components of an effective IT resilience and recovery program, including integration with the business continuity, crisis and incident management programs 3) previous hands on experience in designing and implementing resilience and recovery capabilities on one or more popular technology platforms, with an understanding of the tools and configurations used by each, and 4) ability to make effective decisions efficiently, communicating clearly the value of each as well as the benefits of an IT resilience program to both other IT and business professionals. Key Responsibilities: * Identifies current and desired future state technical resilience control capabilities incorporating industry leading technology and practices that enhance AXP's ability to manage technology risk * Partner with Enterprise Resilience and Business Continuity leadership to ensure Technology recovery objectives (time and data) align with the business impact assessments of services and process supported by applications * Partner with Enterprise Architecture to develop new application resiliency policies and standards * Establish disaster recovery techniques for all types of potential risks, threats and events * Establish meaningful and actionable critical metrics and reporting related to resilience effectiveness and maturity as well as testing and failover results * Partner with vendors and strategic partners to garner external industry standard methodologies * Adapts plans and programs to changes in the regulatory environment and threat landscape * Enhance technology resilience oversight and governance programs based on criticality of the services provided by third parties, service providers and joint ventures * Partner with our Global Technology Operations Services teams on post-incident reviews to incorporate lessons learned from root causes into a continual improvement process for disaster recovery * Influence partners to achieve targeted levels of resiliency, oversight, controls and compliance * Lead career development and succession management efforts to ensure retention, motivation and engagement of current and future colleague Minimum Qualifications * BA/BS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Cyber Security, or demonstrated technical background and equivalent experience * 5+ years of experience with infrastructure or application architecture, working with on-premise and cloud technology environments, or supporting the design of large technical implementations/data center migrations, including extensive resilience and recovery experience in one or more large organizations with a complex technology footprint * Working knowledge of current technologies (cyber security, servers and virtual systems, networking, storage, database administration, software development lifecycle, replication strategies), and how these technologies are optimized in an effective enterprise architecture strategy * Good communication and negotiation skills combined with an ability to communicate effectively with senior leaders, internal and external auditors and regulators, technology leaders and team members at all levels and technologies * Collaborative approach to solving business problems * Background and experience in technology resilience and disaster recovery, business continuity as well as the methods used in performing risk analysis and business impact analysis * Self-motivated individual who is able to combine outstanding problem-resolution and critical thinking skills with an ability to apply a business and risk lens * Proven ability to adjust quickly to shifting priorities, multiple demands, ambiguity and rapid change * Solid grasp of control testing; must be able to design, document and assess control tests * Experience in people leadership including mentorship and conflict management * Practical experience in doing both written and verbal communication effectively to multiple levels within the organization * Demonstrable ability to take complex technical information and translate it into clear communications (presentations/memos) for a variety of audiences * Disciplined program, project and time management skills with the proven ability to work in a cross functional, matrixed and diverse workforce environment Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the U.S. is required as the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.
