The sixth largest city in metropolitan Broward County, Pompano Beach has a permanent population of about 101,000; seasonal residents are estimated to increase the population to 150,000.

The Pompano Beach Fire/Rescue Department, which achieved the prestigious distinction as an ISO Class 1 department, offers its residents a full complement of firefighting and emergency medical services, including ambulance service. The Department's 250+ employees (200+ combat personnel) are assigned to eight stations located throughout the city. Firefighters work a 24-hour shift with one shift on duty and two consecutive days off duty. Specialty units include a Fire Prevention Bureau and a Training Unit.  The Department also has an Ocean Rescue division.

SALARY

The salary range for Firefighters is $63,251 - $96,264 annually which includes EMT pay. Upon completion of the City of Pompano Beach's paramedic training program, salary increases to $69,163 - $105,261 annually. Educational incentive pay, as required by the State, is also paid for completion of Associate's and Bachelor's degrees. Firefighters are eligible for merit increases annually until reaching the maximum of the pay grade.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Applications must be fully completed and all required copies and notarizations are to be done prior to submission of application. Incomplete applications will be disqualified. Select qualified applicants will be scheduled for an oral panel interview. Candidates selected to advance in the recruitment process will proceed to a polygraph exam and a background investigation. Passage of each component does not guarantee an employment offer will be extended. If an offer of employment is made, it is conditional upon successful completion of a psychological evaluation, medical examination and a drug screening.

Required at the time of application:

  • At least 18 years of age

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Florida Certified Firefighter

  • Florida Certified Paramedic

  • Exception 1: a currently licensed Florida EMT enrolled in a Florida Paramedic training program within three months of graduation.  Florida Paramedic licensure must be obtained within 1 year from the date of hire.

  • Exception 2: possess a National Registry Paramedic certification (NREMT-P).  Florida Paramedic licensure must be obtained within 1 year from the date of hire.

  • Continued employment beyond 1 year is contingent upon receiving Florida Paramedics licensure.

  • Broward, Palm Beach, or City of Coral Springs Fire Academy Physical Ability Test Card or Candidate Physical Ability Test, or IAFF licensed Candidate Physical Ability Test administered through the National Testing Network (issued within the last year)

  • Valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record and meet the following driving history requirements:

  • have not accrued 12 points within 36 months or 18 points within 48 months

  • have not been convicted on alcohol/drug related offenses within 36 months

  • have not been convicted of two alcohol/drug related offenses within 10 years

  • have not had a suspension, revocation, or restriction due to moving violations or alcohol/drug related problems, including failure to take a breath test within 36 months prior

  • Florida approved 16-hour Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course (EVOC) certificate of completion

  • Vision must be no worse than 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye; must be correctable to no worse than 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other eye

  • No defect or abnormality of hearing

  • Must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application (FL Statutes, Section 633.412(6))

  • Good character and reputation

  • For select candidates, preliminary selection process will include a pass/fail physical ability test, Megacode scenario, and a basic fire and grounds skills test.

  • Further selection processes will also include a panel interview, polygraph exam, and a psychological exam.

  • Assessment of swimming ability will be conducted post-hire during new recruit training.  Remediation provided if necessary.
