FIREFIGHTER/EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled firefighting and emergency medical work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, operating and maintaining fire equipment, apparatus, and quarters, and responding to medical emergencies and rendering emergency medical assistance.

Work also involves custodial maintenance of fire station equipment, apparatus and quarters. Employees of this class learn and participate in the operation of apparatus and the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions. Firefighting and rescue work are the most difficult and responsible areas of activity, a major portion of time is spent training and studying methods, techniques, and organization, and in routine duties in the care and maintenance of fire department property and equipment. Work is usually performed in accordance with specific instructions and well-defined policies and procedures, under the command of a superior officer. Supervision is received from an administrative superior.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

  • Participates in rescue operations and the application of emergency first aid; provides emergency care (ALS/BLS) as required at the scene of emergency and overall medical response at the emergency scene; may coordinate the treatment and transport of patients.

  • Responds to fire alarms; lays and connects hoses; operates hose nozzles and directs fog and water streams. Raises and climbs ladders; use fire suppression equipment and extinguishers; uses chainsaws, ventilation fans, axes and similar tools to ventilate buildings and expose hidden fire areas.

  • Removes persons from danger and administers first aid to injured persons.

  • Employee participates in post-fire salvage operations such as removing and covering household articles and cleaning debris.

  • Operates rescue unit in responding to emergency calls involving automobile accidents, heart attacks, and other medical emergencies.

  • Employee in this classification performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the fire station building and grounds, and fire apparatus, auxiliary equipment and tools.

  • Employee in this position participates in pre-fire surveys, fire prevention inspections, and similar activities.

  • Employee may be assigned in the position of a higher classification (Acting Lieutenant) in the absence of a shift officer.

  • Participates in a continuing program of training and instruction or an individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled training and classes in the station and at other locations.

  • Receives training in the operation of fire equipment and apparatus; drives and operates fire apparatus as an assigned driver; checks equipment and apparatus daily; pumps water to fire at a designated pressure; monitors condition of unit.

  • Regularly responds to call backs while off-duty.

  • Performs other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Ability to learn and perform a variety of firefighting and emergency medical duties, methods, and techniques within a reasonable length of time.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and visually, and to read, comprehend, and write the English language.

  • Ability to perform limited mechanical work involved in maintaining firefighting and rescue apparatus, equipment, and tools.

  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper courses of action.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

To be qualified to apply and test for the Firefighter/EMT position, candidates must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent GED,

  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities, and skills,

  • Incumbent must possess a valid Nebraska Driver's License when operating a vehicle,

  • Possess current Nebraska license or current National Registry as an Emergency Medical Technician,

  • At least three months of experience with a career, combination, or volunteer fire department in the field of firefighting OR

  • Candidates not possessing three months of experience as described above may instead meet minimum requirements by having both the NFPA 1001 (Firefighter I) and NFPA 1072 (Hazardous Materials Operations) certifications recognized by the Nebraska State Fire Marshall.

  • Must reside within 30 miles of city limits on a serviceable road.

  • Candidates residing outside the residency requirement must establish residency within 30 miles within the first six months of employment.

  • Ability to meet such physical requirements as may be established by the City.

The following qualifications are preferred, but not required:

  • Preferred: Associates Degree or higher in Fire Science or related field.

  • Preferred: National Registry and Nebraska Licensure as a Paramedic.

  • Preferred: Ability to converse effectively in Spanish.

NOTE: Any candidate that does not possess NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations recognized by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal at the time of application must have at least three months of experience as described above and will be required to obtain such certification within one year of employment.

  • Once your completed application is received, it will be reviewed after this posting closes on April 30, 2024.

  • If you are eligible to test, you will be provided the date and time of your testing appointment. Please note that availability for all tests and interviews is limited and alternate dates may not be available.

All candidates must be available on the following dates:

  • Written and Physical testing dates - these are typically scheduled for two weeks after the posting closes. Once your application is reviewed after April 30, 2024 you will be notified if you are eligible to test and your assigned testing date, if applicable.

  • Candidates successfully completing the above testing will be required to submit their fingerprints and a completed Personal History Statement within two weeks of their test date.

  • The Personal History Statement (PHS) that may be found by going to our website at www.fremontne.gov, hovering over "Government" in the top menu, selecting "Human Resources", and then selecting the "Firefighter Candidate Packet" in the menu on the left. The PHS contains a list of additional required documents that must be included with your application packet.

  • The PHS and additional documents may be emailed to jobs@fremontne.gov, or mailed/delivered to the City of Fremont Human Resources Department at 400 E. Military Avenue, Fremont, NE 68025.

  • Candidates that successfully complete the above requirements will be scheduled for a Chief's interview.

  • Additional interviews will be conducted by the Civil Service Commission at a later date.

  • Candidates must be available for all scheduled hiring activities to be considered. We will attempt to work with scheduling conflicts, but alternative dates or times may not be available.
