WORK OBJECTIVE

Attain the necessary training and State certifications to perform intermediate protective service work in fire suppression and providing emergency medical treatment including but not limited to medical emergencies, trauma emergencies, and patient transports. This is a training position in which the Firefighter Trainee is required to be enrolled in, and complete, both the Fire Academy and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Programs.

At the conclusion of the Academy, the Firefighter Trainee must pass the certification exams for both Fire Standards and EMT. The City of Oviedo will pay for any future costs associated with the Fire Academy/EMT Program. The Firefighter Trainee will be responsible for becoming a certified Firefighter/EMT and completing the Oviedo Fire Department's Firefighter Trainee program and sign a contract for a minimum of a three-year employment commitment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. Regularly attend the Fire Academy/EMT classes and program requirements.

Successfully complete all areas of study while attending the Fire Academy/EMT program.

At the conclusion of the Fire Academy/EMT coursework, successfully pass the State of Florida EMT and Fire Standards Certification Examinations.

Pass the Fire Teams and CPAT Test.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: (Upon completion of the EMT and Fire Academy)

Knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics as applied to fire suppression.

Knowledge of emergency medical care to the EMT level.

Knowledge of fire suppression and rescue practices, fire prevention, principles, methods, and practices; local codes related to emergencies; state statutes, city ordinances.

Knowledge of the principles of anatomy, physiology and chemistry in relation to the respiratory and circulatory systems.

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment and automobile extraction and transportation.

Knowledge of the street system and geography of the City.

Ability to operate medical equipment.

Ability to perform fire suppression and rescue activities.

Ability to perform pre-hospital emergency medical care to the EMT level of certification.

Ability to read and interpret manuals, policies and other documents.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates and the general public.

Ability to keep records and prepare reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation or its equivalent. Possession of a valid Florida driver license and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Candidates should be enrolled or attending a Fire Academy/EMT combined program or completed either an EMT or Fire Academy program. Must meet and maintain all requirements for position as established by the City and the State of Florida.

Must be in good physical condition. Vision: minimum of 20/40 corrected.

Must be of good moral character: no felony convictions; no misdemeanor convictions involving moral character, perjury, or false statements as outlined in Florida Statutes. Required to successfully meet agency drug/nicotine use standards and successfully pass a drug/nicotine screen test. The candidate must pass a physical compliant with NFPA 1582.

Oviedo Fire/Rescue is an active Fire Department that participates in numerous community based functions, provides continual training opportunities, and responds to over 5,000 calls per year. Oviedo Fire/Rescue also holds a Class 2 ISO rating.

The Department currently operates out of two stations which house three Engine, a tower trucks, two Rescues, one Battalion Chief, and other specialty equipment.
