If you submit a complete application and meet the minimum qualifications for the position you will be sent an email with instructions to self-schedule your written exam through the National Testing Network website. We will notify you via email with your written exam invitation and instructions. These emails will go out between June 27 - July 15, 2024, based on when you apply. Invited candidates are expected to schedule their testing through the online registration process (www.nationaltestingnetwork.com). If you can't afford the testing fee, you may apply for a testing fee waiver, if you are invited to take the exam.

Candidate Firefighter Physical Assessment: (50% of overall score)

Candidates who have completed the Firefighter Written NTN examination and passed with a 70% or higher will be invited to participate in the Candidate Firefighter Physical Assessment. This is a PASS or FAIL test. Failing any one of the standards is considered a failure for the entire test. Those invited to take the Physical Assessment will be contacted by email.

• NOTE: These requirements differ from the Academy physical fitness standards. Recruits should be well beyond these minimum standards by the start of the Academy. Virtual Interviews (Spark Hire):

There will be one round of virtual interviews. Candidates who are selected to participate will receive an invitation email with instructions on how to complete. You must receive an email invitation to participate in the virtual interview. Those who are selected to continue on to the hiring process will receive an invitation to participate in a psychological examination and background check.

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT):

Candidates identified to move forward in the process will be notified via e-mail of LVFR requirements for CPAT testing. Successful completion of the CPAT with a licensed CPAT agency completed between Feb. 1, 2024 and November 30, 2024 is required as part of the selection process. If you do not have CPAT through a licensed agency then CPAT testing will be available at Cashman Field (850 Las Vegas Blvd N, Las Vegas, NV 89101) (Appointment is required). Information regarding scheduling a CPAT test at Cashman will be emailed to those selected to attend the Hiring Interviews. If you have a current CPAT attach a copy of the certificate to your application when you apply.

The CPAT is a separate requirement from the Physical Assessment, which is part of the examination process noted above.

Suitability Assessment and Background Check:

A subgroup consisting of the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a suitability assessment and background check. The assessment evaluates the following: interpersonal skills, including sensitivity and respect for others; decision-making and judgment; maturity and discipline; honesty, integrity and personal ethics; setting and achieving goals, fire service adaptability, and a pattern of conduct acceptable to the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Department. A comprehensive background investigation consists of employment verification and a felony/misdemeanor record check. If you are invited to the suitability examination and background screening, you will receive notification via email with further instructions.

Drug Screening and Medical Exam:

Hired candidates will be administered a pre-employment drug screening test. A pre- employment medical examination is conducted by a city physician to evaluate the candidate's medical fitness (vision, hearing, cardiovascular, respiratory, etc.) to perform the full range of duties.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Learn to extinguish fires, perform rescue operations and maintain fire station facilities and equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry level class in the Firefighter series. This class is distinguished from the Firefighter in that entry level positions have not achieved successful completion of the city of Las Vegas Fire Training Academy.

Supervision Received

Receives immediate supervision from higher level supervisory staff and training instructors.

Essential Functions:

• Participate in Fire Academy training program and in on-the-job training activities; drill with engine company members; attend special instruction sessions in firefighting, rescue and emergency medical procedures and techniques.

• Learn the proper procedures for responding to fire incidents, including laying lines of hose, directing streams of water, carrying and setting up ladders and other equipment, including motorized equipment, ventilating buildings, performing rescue work and cleaning up after fires to limit water damage.

• Learn the proper procedures and techniques for rendering first aid and emergency medical assistance.

• Learn to clean and service firefighting apparatus and equipment, including motorized equipment; test and wash hose;and other equipment.

• Learn and follow all applicable safety procedures.

• Meet the criteria established by the department for acceptable performance at each step or level of training in order to progress to the next level.

• May be required to drive city vehicles to pick up supplies and equipment or to drive to and from training exercises.

Marginal Functions:

• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Experience and Training Requirements

Experience:

Some firefighting experience is desirable.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from high school. College level course work in fire science, fire administration or a related field is desirable.

License, Certificate, and Special Requirements

Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Must be 18 years of age on the date of application.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue is a full-service transport agency. Operations personnel are required to complete both suppression and EMS certification trainings in an academy setting and maintain proficiency thereafter. Possession of a current State of Nevada, Clark County OR National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate and an Advanced-EMT (AEMT) certificate are desirable but not required at the time of application.

As a condition of continued employment, employees will need to complete both EMT and Advanced EMT (AEMT) certification requirements prior to the completion of initial training, and maintenance will be required thereafter.

Please note: The Clark County Health District will not issue an EMT certification to anyone under 18 years of age.

Must meet current physical condition requirements on the date of appointment.

Updated verification of CPAT completion status will be required for future academies.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURES:A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. Those applicants meeting the minimum requirements will be invited to participate in the written exam weighted 50%, and those candidates with a minimum score of 70% or higher will be invited to participate in the Candidate Firefighter Physical Assessment weighted 50%. Those with a combined score of 70% or higher will placed on an eligible list.
