Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Fire Captain, performs a wide variety of skilled fire protection functions for the City of St. George, including, but not limited to, combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires and maintaining stations, apparatus, and equipment.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by positions in this class.)

1.Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents; provide appropriate services as required, including emergency rescue and fire suppression; perform search and rescue for trapped or injured persons; perform extraction of victims and forcible entry into buildings.

2.Respond to service calls, including but not limited to citizen assists, lift assists, and smoke detector battery changes.

3.Respond to various hazardous materials incidents; perform defensive or offensive activities that will be dependent upon levels of certification in accordance with state and federal regulations; maintain knowledge and training about hazardous materials.

4.Perform emergency medical and first aid services as needed; evaluate the condition of patients and assess pertinent information about medical profile and injuries; determine treatment in accordance with local protocols.

5.Participate in various fire prevention operations, activities, and programs, including training, fire investigations, code enforcement, and equipment operation and maintenance; Study street and occupancy locations; study building plans and fire prevention systems in buildings.

6.Participates in various drills and training sessions and assists in pre-fire planning and developing property maps and sketches. May participate in a variety of activities requiring travel, including off-site in locations

7.Participate in cleaning and maintaining facilities, grounds, equipment, and apparatus; ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained at assigned facilities; ensure that all equipment and apparatus are in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls.

8.Give tours of assigned facilities, demonstrate fire equipment and apparatus, and participate in other educational programs for various groups and the general public pertaining to a variety of life safety

9.May drive fire apparatus and/or operate fire apparatus in emergency and non-emergency situations.



  1. Operate numerous types of rescue, emergency, and fire suppression equipment and apparatus as necessary; operate, inspect, repair, and perform other technical tasks related to maintaining the apparatus, equipment, and facilities in the area of assignment.

  2. Use departmental computer equipment to input, review, and access records, information, and other various data.

  3. Prepare reports regarding emergency incidents, emergency medical incident reports regarding patient and incident information, and training reports.

  4. Takes leadership position in emergency situations in the absence of Captain or Battalion Chief.

  5. Performs other related duties as required.

  6. Must meet the requirements for essential job tasks per National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582.


Additional Requirements:

● Must be a minimum of 18 years of age or older.

● May be required to graduate from a City of St. George Firefighter Recruit Academy and/or new hire task training program.

● Must reside within 100 miles from St. George City Center per St. George Fire Department Policy 1047 Residency Requirements at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment.

● If selected for a part-time position, the candidate must show proof of required certifications at the time of application or 14 days before the start date of the Academy (6/10/24).

● Will be required to have medical testing and immunizations including, but not limited to, Tuberculosis (TB) testing, HIV testing, Tetanus, Hepatitis B Surface Antibody & Antigen HbsAg, Hepatitis C Surface Antibody, Liver Panel, and Physical Exam.

● Will be required to pass a Pulmonary Function Test prior to employment.

● Must have no convictions for a criminal offense, hostile to public service, or habitual law violations.

● Must have successfully completed all entrance examinations or requirements established by the City. This may include written, physical, polygraph examinations, background investigations, etc.

● Must have far vision acuity of at least 20/40 binocular in each eye with corrective lenses. Vision correctable to 20/20 is preferred.

Must have color perception-monochromatic vision adequate to ensure the ability to use imaging devices such as thermal imaging cameras. Must not have monocular vision or any eye condition that results in the inability to safely perform one or more of the essential job tasks.

● Meet the medical requirements per NFPA 1582

● Must be able to work a minimum of 45 hours per month.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Moderately heavy physical work. Required to lift or carry 50 pounds on a regular basis.

Continuous standing or walking. Intense exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, or grease.

Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

Every fire department employee shall assume responsibility that all their certifications, licenses, and registrations are up-to-date and all continuing education requirements are complete.

● Must possess and maintain a valid Utah Driver's License 30 days after the appointment. (if residing outside the State of Utah within the 100-mile requirement of St. George City Fire Department Policy 1047 Residency Requirements, Driver's license requirement must be approved by the City's Human Resource Department for non-Utah valid license)

● At the time of application or 14 days before the start date of the Academy (6/10/24), the candidate must possess the following current certifications issued by the Utah Fire Service Certification Council, or if issued by another state's system, bear the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) seal and/or the Pro Board Accreditation seal. If applying for this position with certifications issued from another state's system, Utah State certifications must be obtained within six months of appointment:

● Firefighter I & II

● Hazardous Materials - Awareness & Operations

● CPR/AED certification card

● May be required to graduate from a City of St. George Firefighter Recruit Academy and/or new hire task training program.

● Will be required to obtain additional training and certifications after graduation including, but not limited to: National Incident Management System IS-100:

Introduction to the Incident Command System; IS-200: Basic Incident Command for Initial Response; IS-700: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System; IS-800:

National Response Framework, An Introduction. Wildland Firefighter I - Utah Fire Service Certification Council Wildland FF 1 or National Wildfire Coordinating Group Firefighter (NWCG) Type 2

● Failure to obtain required additional certifications will result in loss of position. Certifications must be maintained as a condition of employment.

● Every fire department member shall assume responsibility that all their certifications, licenses, and registrations are up to date and all continuing education requirements are complete.

Candidates applying with an EMT certification (preferred, but not required for the position):

Emergency Medical Technician, AEMT, or Paramedic license issued through the Utah Bureau of

Emergency Medical Services or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians must be current

at the time of application. If a recruit is National Registry certified in a state other than Utah, reciprocity with

Utah must be started immediately after the appointment and completed within six (6) months. Utah law requires the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Preparedness to exclude from EMS licensure any individual who may pose an unacceptable risk to public health and safety, as indicated by his/her criminal history.

The Utah Department of Health conducts a background check on anyone who seeks a license as an EMS Professional; this includes an FBI background check. Electronic fingerprints may be taken as part of the background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

● Basic firefighting techniques.

Ability to:

● Work under strict discipline when responding to fire, rescue, or related emergencies, and work in a paramilitary organization which relies upon policies and procedures to govern firefighter behavior.

● Establish and maintain effective working relations with elected officials, department head, co-workers, general public, and officials and employees of other jurisdictions.

● Communicate effectively, and read and understand technical material, rules, and regulations related to firefighting.

● Read and write in English at a business level.

● Work independently; make critical decisions and use initiative and common sense in a variety of inspection or investigative situations.
