The TEST DATE is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at 8:30 am at the Lakeside Center

  • Meeting Room, 150 Magnolia St, Beaumont, TX 77701 (MUST PRESENT A VALID DRIVERS LICENSE AT THE TEST LOCATION).  The test will be cognitive skills only (No fire or EMS knowledge assumed).  There will be a physical test after the written test. Details will be sent to applicants.

Communicate with individuals/crew while en route to and at the emergency scene to insure appropriate coordination of apparatus and personnel; operate within the Incident Management System and departmental operating procedures; if necessary, assume command, direct and coordinate emergency scene activity within the parameters established by accepted incident management principles and departmental operating procedures, until relieved by an Officer of higher rank; apply the Risk Management Model to tactical situations; stretch hose line or use extinguisher to deliver water, foam, or other extinguishing agents at an emergency scene.  provide direct medical assistance to persons requiring emergency attention or assist others in providing medical assistance; participate in training classes, skills practice, and drills to enhance job-related skills and abilities; willingness to attend external lectures, seminars, courses, etc. and read external documents (e.g. professional trade publications) to stay current in emergency services operations; facilitate the training of others members so that they are properly trained to carry out their assigned duties, including planning, developing, conducting, and/or evaluating formal or informal sessions or drills, classes, or skills; review, complete, file, distribute, forward, and record information in logs, forms, reports and systems that must be completed as a routine part of the job; inspect, clean, and maintain personal gear and equipment to ensure proper safe operation; tour commercial and non-commercial buildings and sites to gather pre-incident planning information; inspect buildings and premises for compliance with fire codes or hazards, to check on complaints, and to assist in the investigation if arson cases; participate in physical fitness activities to maintain physical conditioning; assist in the resolution of problems or questions referred by staff, department of City administrators or employees, City Council persons, or the public.

Other Job Functions:  Performs other duties as required.

Must pass a strength and agility test and physical examination (see below for requirements).  Must possess a valid Class C Texas driver's license.  May be subject to bodily injury in the line of duty.  Works 24 hours on duty, 48 hours off.  May be subject to work overtime as necessary.

Knowledge:  Current industry standards and best practices of progressive emergency services organizations; the geographical layout of the City of Beaumont, street names and numbers, and hydrant locations; safe operating practices and procedures for emergency apparatus and equipment used within the department; generally accepted and department-specific practices, procedures, techniques, methods, instruments, and equipment; principles, policies and procedures relative to emergency medical and technical rescue operations; firefighting, salvage and overhaul operations; hazardous materials  incident operations; hazardous materials incident operations; the laws, regulations, policies, and procedures relevant to emergency services response activities; organizational philosophy and ethical policies that direct all personnel in the discharge of their duties; structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Skills/Abilities:  The operation of emergency medical equipment; fire equipment and apparatus; fire, emergency medical, and hazardous materials practices; rescue and extrication procedures; filling out forms for documentation; performing physically strenuous activities in a high stress environment; communications and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Essential Physical Requirements:  Frequently work at heights greater than ten feet; occasionally work at heights of up to 100 ft.; frequently move objects 40-60 lbs. short distances (30 feet or more); frequently hold 80-100 lbs.; infrequently carry 50--150 lbs.; occasionally lift or drag in excess of 150 lbs. of force; perform duties requiring frequent pulling of 40 lbs or more, such as removing hose form apparatus, pulling ceilings, starting power equipment, and opening doors on apparatus, as required; bend, climb, balance stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, twist, and perform repetitive motions repeatedly or continually over time to perform emergency medical services, fire ground, or other response-related duties; lift arms above shoulder level to cut vent holes with an axe or force entry into vehicles using specialized tools; travel across wet, slippery, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; use self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to prevent exposure to hazardous materials and infectious diseases; tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing job duties; work for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration; work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements; within accepted safety practices, rely on sense of sight, hearing touch, and smell to help determine the nature of an emergency and make operational decisions; make life and death decisions during emergency situations.

Education/Experience:  Applicant can take the Grade I Firefighter exam if he/she has successfully completed a TCFP approved class and TDSHS or National Registry recognized class, but has not yet received a state certification.  Graduation from Highs School or GED equivalency.  Must be able to pass a civil service exam, criminal history review, oral board interview, physical abilities test, and medical physical that complies with department hiring procedures.  Possession of a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license, and ability to obtain a Class B motor vehicle operator's license within one year of hire.  Certified as Structure Firefighter

  • Basic by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.  Certified as Emergency Medical Technician

  • Basic by the Texas Department of State Health Services.  Certified at the Operations Level for Hazardous Materials response by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards within one year of hire.  CPR Certification

  • American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or equivalent, within one year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:  Texas Commission on Fire Protection certifications:

Structure Firefighter

  • Intermediate or above, Driver/Operator, Fire Service Instructor, Fire Inspector, Fire (Cause & Origin) Investigator, Arson Investigator, Hazardous Materials Technician, Fire Officer I, Fire Officer II, Marine Firefighter, Aircraft Rescue Firefighter.

Texas State Department of Health Services certifications:

Emergency Medical Technician

  • Intermediate or above

Completion of accredited college hours in any area according to the following increments:

30+ semester hours, 60+ semester hours, Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree.  Military Service with Honorable Discharge.

City of Beaumont resident

Some assignments require the use of City vehicles on City business.  Individuals must be physically and mentally capable of operating the vehicles safely, obtain a valid Class B driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record.  Personnel must maintain all minimum entry level requirements and any certifications for which he/she received preference points during the hiring process for the duration of his/her employment.  Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation, polygraph and drug/alcohol screen test.  Applicants MUST complete the entire application.
