Firefighter & EMS Teacher

Pawtucket School Department Firefighter & EMS Teacher Perkins Grant Position Summary: A Secondary Firefighter & EMS Teacher will teach new cadets the theory and practice necessary to become a firefighter.

They conduct theoretical lessons on academic subjects such as law, basic chemistry, safety regulations, risk management, fire prevention, reading blueprints, etc. Firefighter & EMS teachers also provide more hands-on, practical instruction regarding the usage of assistive equipment and rescue tools such as a fire hose, ropes, smoke masks, fire gear, etc., but also heavy physical training, breathing techniques, first aid, self-defense tactics, and vehicle operations. They also prepare and develop lesson plans and new training programs as new public service-related regulations and issues arise.

The instructors monitor the students' progress, evaluate them individually and prepare performance evaluation reports on each student. The Firefighter & EMS teacher will also work closely with the industry partner for this CTE pathway, ensuring students are prepared to enter the Fire Academy. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and implement lessons to teach skills required for students to master competencies in Firefighting and Emergency Medical Services, with the integration of English language arts, mathematics, and critical thinking skill development Serve as a classroom leader who works to provide exceptional instruction that affords all students the opportunity to excel academically and meet industry and State Standards. Deliver content-specific expertise to instructional planning in order to equip students with the skills necessary for success in the CTE Firefighter & EMS pathway. Prepare individuals to manage operations for public safety protocols.

Provide group and individual instruction utilizing effective teaching strategies, aids, and equipment Evaluate students' skills and career readiness competencies, and maintain accurate student records Manage the classroom in a positive manner conducive to learning Work effectively as part of a team both within the CTE Department as well as schoolwide Collaborate in the planning process for modifications in curriculum, development of outreach activities, and real-life applications Participate actively in subject matter advisory committee and community outreach Assist in the recruitment, employment, or internship offerings for students Accurately report student attendance in a timely manner Perform other duties as required Create a positive learning environment that promotes high expectations and provides opportunities for all students to experience success Maintain positive, professional relationships with students, families, and colleagues Communicate with students, parents, and school staff to ensure that students are on track in their learning and making progress towards goals Is Knowledgeable of and Skilled at: Experience and knowledge in Fire Science, Firefighting, and Emergency Medical Services CTE Standards RI Governor's Workforce Board PrepareRI Work-Based Learning Dual/Concurrent Enrollment Cultural competency Conflict resolution Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups Able to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents, and the community Work with data of varied types and/or purposes, and utilize job-related equipment. Completion of NFPA 1041: Fire Instructor Level I (course through the RI Fire Academy) 5 years experience in Firefighting (career or volunteer) High School Diploma or GED Preferred Qualifications: RIDE Secondary CTE Certification in Firefighter Physical Requirements/Work Environment: Frequently required to stand, sit and walk Frequently required to talk and hear Occasional bending Must be able to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, reach, and stoop/kneel/crouch Occasional lifting or carrying weighing up to 25 pounds Must have clarity of vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify students and ensure safety The work environment is typically within a school classroom setting, although the employee may teach in a hands-on real-life setting.
