The Monterey Fire Department serves the City of Monterey, City of Pacific Grove, City of Carmel-by-the-Sea and Sand City as well as the Naval Postgraduate School, La Mesa Village and the Monterey Regional Airport. The department operates out of six stations strategically located to achieve the shortest response time to emergency calls. The Monterey Fire Department prides itself as being a customer service organization by providing excellent emergency services as well as additional public safety support through Fire Prevention, Public Education and Special Operations (Urban Search and Rescue, Marine Safety, and Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting).

The City of Monterey Fire Departmentis currently recruitingfor the positionof Firefighter. The FireDepartment has six (6) vacancies at this time; however, additional vacancies are anticipated in the near future.

Candidates who successfully complete all phases of this recruitment process will be placed on an eligibility list. Theeligibility list is active for 12 months and may be extended for an additional 12 monthsto beused infilling additional vacancies that occur.

For planning purposes, first-round interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of May 20, 2024. If you are selected to move forward, departmental interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of May 27, 2024.

Eligibility Requirements for Firefighter

The City of Monterey's Fire Department is currently seeking Firefighter candidates who must meet the following requirements. Copies of the documents listed below MUST be attached to your online application at the time of submittal. Failure to meet the following requirements and/or failure to attach the documents will result in the disqualification from this recruitment process.

  • Possession of a high school diploma, GED or higher

  • Possession of a valid California Driver License

  • Possession of an active

  • NOTE: Lateral candidates as defined as candidates with at least one continuous year (including probationary period) of full-time, paid experience within the last two years as a firefighter in any fire protection district, city, county, state or federal agency are not required to submit a CPAT certificate or complete the FireTEAM test.

Desirable Qualifications for Firefighter

Additional preference points will be given to candidates who:

  • Possess a current Firefighter-I certificate or higher

  • Possess an active Paramedic License valid in California

Application Process

A limited number of applicants who clearly show that they most closely meet the needs of this position in terms of training, experience, education, and other job-related characteristics will be accepted to participate in the selection process.

This process will include evaluation and initial screening of the standard on-line City application to determine which candidates progress to the next phase of the recruitment process.

The subsequent selection will include the evaluation of the written test score, panel interview, and a final departmental interview. As a condition of employment, the selected candidate will be required to successfully pass a medical exam including a drug screen and an extensive background check. Selected candidates will be required to successfully complete an instructional fire academy in order to continue employment with the Monterey Fire Department.

The fire academy meets/exceeds California Firefighter 1 standards and includes both cognitive and manipulative tested elements, some of which are strenuous. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to make changes to components of the examination process.

The Position

Under direction, prevent emergency situations or reduce their potential impact to cause property damage, life loss and environmental damage, respond to and conduct emergency work, such as firefighting, rescue, identification and control of hazardous material incidents, first-aid and CPR; to conduct non-emergency work, such as facility, apparatus and equipment maintenance, hazard inspection, public education, training, repair, research and subsequent writing of reports for management analysis; to conduct related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: responds to emergencies and assists with mitigation by confining, controlling, and extinguishing fire, conducting rescue, ventilation, salvage, overhaul and clean-up as required; responds to emergencies not fire-related, such as gas leaks, electrical hazards, unidentified smoke, first-aid and CPR; conducts non-emergency work, such as maintenance of equipment, apparatus and facilities; conducts research for assignments, subsequent report writing and related duties, such as typing, filing, attending meetings and compiling statistics; trains department personnel and the public; takes and resolves complaints; inspects buildings, materials and processes and issues correction notices; conducts self-training to maintain required skills and participates in departmental training; makes maps and sketches of hazards, systems and streets; makes presentations to public groups about emergency activities and fire department operations; when assigned, acts as relief for higher levels of responsibility; as assigned, operates equipment and apparatus; meets with public and private agencies to resolve assigned operational goals and related problems; develops proposals for new concepts; makes recommendations regarding department operations.

Typical Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school. Additional education in Fire Science or related fields is desirable.

Experience: None

License and Certification Required

Possession of a valid California Driver License and current Emergency Medical Technician certification is required. Firefighter Endorsement for the California Driver License must be obtained within 10 months of employment

Supplemental Info

Knowledge of: Elementary physics, chemistry, mechanics, general mathematics and driving.

Ability to: Learn and apply technical firefighting principles and techniques; principles of hydraulics as applied to fire department operations; understand and follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative relations with the public, City and departmental personnel; conduct research for assignments and subsequently prepare and write reports and accomplish related work, such as keeping records, compiling statistics, typing and filing; make oral and written presentation; conduct mechanical work; conduct work with physical endurance and agility; learn to apply City and departmental knowledge and physical skills necessary to accomplish emergency and non-emergency work quickly and safely; speak to private and public groups; use and maintain power tools, fire department equipment and apparatus; learn and apply City, State, Federal laws relating to the fire department's missions and goals; prepare maps and sketches; learn and apply the City's water system, streets and emergency routes.
