Job Summary

Under direction of the Training Coordinator, this position performs duties that include the completion of essential elements of course coordination, provides accurate and up-to-date learning objectives and maintains various required training records. Areas of instruction include but are not limited to Emergency Medical Courses and Virginia Department of Fire Programs courses. Part-Time Instructors are responsible for providing professional quality work, in conducting and teaching courses within the prescribed curriculum of study. Position is responsible for maintaining training aids, equipment and may provide instruction in any of the above based on level of certification.

Person(s) in this position will encounter sensitive information in the performance of their duties and is expected to maintain that information with complete confidentiality.

Job Functions

Essential Functions

  • Employs effective instructional practices and media to promote learning.

  • Instructs and assists in other capacities with basic courses in accordance with the CCVFRA Training needs.

  • Ensures safe and effective use of our training center facilities during course delivery and other related duties.

  • Maintains class attendance rosters with detailed personnel training records pertaining to courses presented.

  • Prepares and distributes training aids such as instructional material, handouts, and visual aids; sets up audiovisual equipment.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Performs related duties as directed.

Qualifications

Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license

  • Must maintain all required certifications and licenses

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools.

  • Must be able to speak and/or signal students to convey or exchange information.

  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment background screening

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma. Experience in Fire and/or Emergency Medical Services training and education. Candidates must possess the appropriate local, state, or national certifications for the course they have been assigned to instruct.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

Five years directly related experience program of instruction. Candidates for Fire Instructor are given preference for the following: VDFP Fire Officer Train the Trainer, VDFP Fire Instructor Train the Trainer, VDFP Driver/Operator-Pumper Train the Trainer, VDFP Driver/Operator-Aerial Train the Trainer, VDFP Mayday Firefighter Down Operations or Mayday Firefighter Down RIT Train the Trainer, VDFP HTR Vehicle Rescue, Rope Rescue Train the Trainer, VDFP/NFPA 1403 Compliance Officer. For EMS, a certified EMS Education Coordinator will provide pre-hospital education curriculums.

Duties are normally performed in a classroom setting. However, there are some training objectives that will expose the role to adverse environmental conditions.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, such as an ambulance, boat, trailer, dive equipment, defibrillator, suction unit, oxygen delivery system, immobilization equipment, pulse oximeter, fire apparatus, pump, ladder, aerial platform, generator, air compressor, hose, hydrant, extinguisher, self-contained breathing apparatus, extrication tools, specialized rescue equipment, hydraulic tools, chain saw, power tools, hand tools, gas detector, smoke ejector, ventilation fan, radiation monitor, meters, medical/first aid supplies, radio communications equipment, or general office equipment. Tasks require the ability to lift, carry or push items more than 100 pounds and may involve a combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling.
