About the Division
The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and DES-managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates, and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 27 buildings, 18 public monuments, four state parks, over 6,000 parking stalls, and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Administrative, Maintenance and Repairs, Parking Services, and Support Services Custodial.
About this Position
The Fire Sprinkler Technician oversees all aspects of the various fire sprinkler systems of Capitol Campus, and other Department of Enterprise Services owned facilities. This position is responsible for ensuring the proper installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repairs of all fire sprinkler systems. This includes documentation for code compliance, reporting to a third-party compliance OFM 12-002 (1/9/17) WGS Position Description Page 2 verification program, and maintaining a system for document retention as required by the Authority Having Jurisdiction. This program is critical for safeguarding lives, protecting property, and maintaining regulatory compliance. You will act as a liaison between property managers, contractors, field engineers, fire departments, local municipalities and others during project coordination and routine maintenance work. You will be the primary contact for Fire Sprinkler vendors, Engineering and Architectural services, consultants, and others.
The Maintenance Mechanic 3 is the lead technician for all Fire Sprinkler systems. You will be responsible for troubleshooting and addressing any issues or malfunctions with Fire Sprinkler systems promptly to minimize downtime and ensure the safety of the building and its occupants. The incumbent in this role will provide training to staff members on how to operate and maintain the fire sprinkler systems, as well as educating them on fire safety procedures. Some of the responsibilities include developing and implementing emergency response plans in case of sprinkler actuation, equipment malfunction, or damage. You will provide risk assessments to identify potential issues with code compliance, proactive equipment maintenance, and fire hazards.
This position is recognized as Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) Designation - for Disaster or Emergency Recovery. This means that this position may be required to report to work to support any emergency situations that affect DES owned properties. This position is vital to ensuring the functionality of the life safety fire suppression and other life safety systems and their vital components remain intact and functioning as required.

Ensure all fire sprinkler systems are properly functioning, and remain compliant with NFPA, IBC, IFC, local codes and regulations for inspection, testing, and maintenance
Implement and administer procedures to complete code required inspection, testing and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems. Perform urgent and routine repairs as needed
Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and code enforcement officials to ensure that fire sprinklers are designed and installed correctly according to NFPA 13, IBC, IFC and local Codes
Review and revise the Campus Standard for Fire Suppression. Ensure proper reporting of inspection, testing and maintenance to appropriate parties. Maintain all applicable reports, plans, recommendations, and documentation regarding fire suppression systems across DES owned properties
