Overview

The City of Valdosta Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of full time Fire Sergeant. This position's major duties include:

• Supervising and assisting in fire suppression and other emergency response activities using the appropriate techniques and equipment.

• Driving fire equipment and apparatus to the scenes of fires and other emergencies.

• Operating a variety of specialized tools and equipment.

• Supervising and participating in search and rescue operations as assigned.

• Supervising and participating in emergency medical response activities.

• Supervising and participating in the maintenance of equipment, vehicles, buildings and grounds.

• Completing a variety of reports; reviewing fire reports for accuracy.

• Supervising assigned personnel; ensuring compliance with department and city policies and procedures.

• Supervising the training of assigned personnel; maintaining required training records.

• Participating in training exercises; maintaining required certifications.

• Assisting in public relations and fire safety education activities.

• Serving as a member of specialized teams as assigned.

• Performing related duties.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of

• Operation of all apparatus and equipment and methods used in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires and in other emergency response operations;

• Firefighting standards, practices, strategies, tactics, and equipment;

• Rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures of the Fire Department;

• Equipment maintenance principles

• Hydrant locations, water systems, and water mains;

• Local, state, and federal fire codes;

• Hazardous materials

• Skills in operation of all firefighting and emergency response equipment, extrication techniques, use of a computer, use of radios and communication equipment, interpersonal relations, and oral and written communication

• Internal Candidates must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Firefighter and achieved a minimum ranking of Corporal or Relief Driver, unless granted an exception as indicated below.

The Following certifications are required

• NPQ or IFSAC Fire Firefighter II Certification

• NPQ IFSAC Fire Officer I Certification

• NPQ or IFSAC Fire Instructor I Certification

• National Registry and/or Georgia EMT Certification

For this job posting only, a temporary amendment to the ordinance is implemented to allow for the promotion to the rank of Fire Sergeant with less than three (3) years'
