Fire Safety Specialist-Environ Health & Safety

Job Summary:

To perform inspections and maintenance on fire detection and suppression systems in accordance with applicable UMMC policies/procedures and state and federal regulations and standards. To provide guidance and training to UMMC personnel concerning safety procedures and the proper use of fire suppression equipment.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field plus two (2) years of related experience or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: NA

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of federal, state, and local fire regulations and protocols. Knowledge of fire sprinkler systems, wet/dry chemical systems, and suppression systems. Skills in performing safety inspections on fire detection and suppression systems and ensuring compliance with applicable safety codes and regulations. Classroom instructional and hands-on training skills. The ability to work in or around hazardous conditions such as exposure to flames, chemicals, and biological agents (required to wear personnel protective equipment). The ability to communicate effectively and react calmly in emergency situations. The ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare and/or present reports.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts periodic routine inspections and/or tests of facilities, fire equipment, and detection and suppression systems.

  • Prepares and maintains documentation related to inspections and tests; maintains inventory of and location drawings of fire equipment.

  • Ensures compliance with and keeps abreast of changes in state, national fire protection association (NFPA), occupational safety and health administration (OSHA), and other relevant safety codes and regulations.

  • Reviews plans for placements of exits, fire suppression systems, and technical features such as automatic closing doors and ventilation flow.

  • Conducts fire safety and prevention classes; conducts hands-on training in fire equipment usage.

  • Serves as a member of and assists in the training of the UMMC fire brigade.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, frequent working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, frequent driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
