THIS POSITION IS ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF PLANTATION FIRE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES.  APPLICANTS MUST BE IN A FULL TIME CAPACITY AS A CITY OF PLANTATION FIRE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE TO APPLY.

SUPPRESSION/RESCUE/TRAINING/PUBLIC AFFAIRS

This is an exempt position, which is responsible for top-level management work in command of several areas assigned by the Department Head. In addition, the job entails the supervision and direction of subordinate members including captains, lieutenants, driver/engineers, paramedics, EMT's, fire/ life safety inspectors, firefighters and members performing specialized administrative functions.

The supervisory work is primarily concerned with the administration of emergency and non-emergency activities. However, there are several secondary areas which this position is responsible.

Considerable independent judgment must be exercised in interpreting protocols and setting direction while ensuring the mission and values of the department are followed.

A member in this position further prepares and submits budget requests for the areas assigned, as well as submitting purchase requests and making recommendations throughout the year. Further responsibilities include long range planning and operational analysis.

This position reports directly to a Deputy Chief, which the exception of the Fire Marshall who directly reports to the Fire Chief. A Battalion Chief is a member of the Fire Chief's Command Staff.

Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Duties include supervision and management of a number of members and assignments.

Trains, guides and advises subordinates in all phases of their responsibilities.

Ensures that all members adhere to the mission, values and protocols of the department.

Reviews performance evaluations as well as evaluating subordinate's performance.

Responds to calls for service as dictated to by the department's response plan.

Identifies problems, makes recommendations and takes appropriate action through task delegation as well as individual action to correct problems.

Reviews and approves correspondence proceeding through the chain of command.

Prepares reports and maintains appropriate records.

Assists in the preparation of the budget.

Prepares and forwards budget requests.

Monitors the RMS for trends related to specific assignments, makes recommendations for changes to operations based on trends, and develops reports to support recommendations.

Develops plans, implements projects, and programs.

Performs various technical staff functions.

Inspects department supplies and equipment for operational readiness.

Ensures that the staffing is maintained within the guidelines set forth by the department

Attends training evolutions to ensure operational readiness.

Reviews disciplinary recommendations, approves and/or recommends disciplinary action.

Approves expenditures for areas assigned.

Administratively assist the Department Head and Deputy Chief with special assignments and projects.

Performs related assignments as directed.

Attends meeting as directed.

May serves as the Duty Chief on a rotating schedule as directed by the Department Head.

Ensures compliance with the City code and procurement policies and procedures by reviewing and monitoring procurement conducted by any designee, department or official.

A member in this position must maintain the trust and confidence of the organization and the Fire Chief

Thorough knowledge of contemporary principles, practices and methods of fire management, administration, organization and operations.

Thorough knowledge and understanding of protocols and written direction for the Fire Department.

Thorough knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances.

Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports.

Ability to communicate effectively, which includes active listening skills.

Ability to plan, supervise and develop members in a manner conductive to effective performance, as well as creating an atmosphere of motivation.

Ability to analyze complex problems and adapt quickly, effectively and reasonably with an appropriate course of action with due regard to surroundings, hazards and circumstances.

Ability to prepare complex budget requests, justifications and related reports.

Ability to remain organized, set priorities, and act accordingly.

Ability to analyze data and respond intelligently and effectively.

Ability to complete multiple tasks in a specific time frame.

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with subordinates, peers and administration.

Ability to work closely and effectively with Federal, State, and Local agencies and departments.

Ability to utilize and learn new modern information systems and standard office software applications.

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE FOR ALL CANDIDATES

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. Must hold the rank of Captain for a minimum of two (2) years.

NIMS Training inclusive of ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 (or ability to obtain within one (1) year). 

REQUIRED FOR RESCUE BATTALION CHIEF

Paramedic Certification with 10 years of experience

BLS Instructor

ACLS Instructor

EMS Instructor Certification (or ability to obtain within a year)

REQUIRED FOR TRAINING BATTALION CHIEF

Florida Minimum Standards certification

Florida Fire Officer 1

Florida Fire Service Instructor 1

Florida Live Fire Training Instructor Certification

BLS Instructor

REQUIRED FOR PREVENTION BATTALION CHIEF

Florida Fire Safety Inspector I Certification

Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals Certification

Florida Minimum Standards certification

DESIREABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited college with a degree.

  • Florida EMT or Paramedic certification (Training Battalion Chief)
  • Burn Master (Training Battalion Chief)

This is a designated "Response" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
