ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Fire Protection Engineer

  • Lead and Fire Protection Engineer review building plans and inspect existing structures to ensure conformance to fire protection codes and standards, and to assist in writing and updating fire protection codes. Incumbents will analyze industrial, commercial, and public buildings and other structures before and after construction; evaluate the fire resistance of structures taking into consideration the usage and contents of buildings; evaluate the availability of water supplies and water delivery; and evaluate entrance/exit capabilities.

Responsibilities include making recommendations for changes in design, materials, or equipment, such as structural components protection, fire protection equipment, alarm systems, and fire extinguishing devices and systems. Work involves considerable coordination with the Fire Department, Planning and Development Department, and other departments regarding the development and enforcement of fire protection codes. Work is accomplished with considerable independence within broad policy outlines.

Examples of Typical Job Functions:

  • Provides technical assistance and identifying permitting requirements to architects, contractors, engineers, and other private industry professionals in interpreting and complying with fire codes and standards.

  • Reviews construction site plans and building plans for compliance with fire protection codes and standards.

  • Determines whether water availability and water delivery systems are adequate to protect buildings.

  • Evaluates the storage, handling, and usage of flammable and combustible materials, and hazardous materials for compliance with fire codes, standards, and other regulations.

  • Evaluates process engineering drawings, specifications, reports, and other documentation for compliance with fire codes, standards, and regulations.

  • Evaluates alternate means and methods for achieving code compliance.

  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

  • Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.

  • Works more than forty hours in a workweek without additional compensation to perform assigned job duties, including weekends, evenings, early morning hours, and holidays as required.

While the duties of Lead positions can vary by department and work group, some examples of Lead responsibilities include:

  • Training new and current employees

  • Assigning, reviewing, and approving work.

  • Handling the more complex and technical problems and customer inquiries in the work unit.

  • Reviewing and recommending approval/denial for code modifications and appeals.

  • Supervising a work unit whenever the regular supervisor is absent.

  • Completing various activity statistical reports, budget monitoring, and/or other special projects.

  • Ensuring that department management is informed of critical issues or other emergencies.

  • Providing input on employee performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.

  • Handling the day-to-day scheduling of employee breaks, work periods, and coverage of workstations or public counters.

  • Ensures work is performed in compliance with section/division/department standards and established deadlines.

  • Depending on staff assignment may perform other duties and tasks.

Currently there are three vacancies for Fire Protection Engineer, two in the Planning and Development department and one in the Fire department. There is one vacancy for Fire Protection Engineer

  • Lead in the Planning and Development department.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Knowledge of; building construction, design, and materials as related to fire prevention and fire control; fire codes and regulations; hazard analysis and Community Risk Reduction, fire detection, fire alarm, and fire suppression systems.

  • Ability to communicate technical requirements to a diverse customer base; work cooperatively with customers, staff, and executive leadership; develop written clear policies and procedures.

  • Solution oriented and have a customer service mindset.

SALARY

Fire Protection Engineer

  • Lead

Pay and Hiring Range $100,235 to $134,326 annually.

Fire Protection Engineer

Pay Range: $86,590 to $127,920 annually.

Hiring Range: $86,590 to $105,248 annually.

  • Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.

  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of experience in fire protection engineering.

  • Bachelor's degree in fire protection engineering or a related field.

  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

  • By the end of probation, must obtain the following certifications:

  • Option 1

  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner.

  • NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS).

  • Options 2

  • Registered Professional Engineer/Fire Protections (PE) in the State of Arizona

  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner.

  • Option 3

  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner

  • Three NICET Level III or IV certifications in at least two of the following areas:

  • Fire Alarms Systems

  • Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarms Systems

  • Inspection and Testing of Water-based systems

  • Special Hazard Systems

  • Water-Based Systems Layout

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience in fire protection engineering.

  • NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist.

  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner certification.

  • Fire prevention plan review/ inspection experience.

  • Project management experience.

  • Supervisory experience including training staff.

  • Three NICET Level III or IV certifications in Fire Alarms Systems, Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarms Systems, Inspection and Testing of Water-based systems, Special Hazard Systems, or Water-Based Systems Layout.
