JOB SUMMARY
Reporting directly to the Assistant Fire Marshal, responds to emergency calls that involve fire, hazardous materials, and emergency operations center needs. Conducts fire and life safety inspections and fire investigations.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Inspects businesses, schools, multi-family residential buildings, etc. to ensure compliance with local, state, and national codes
Conducts inspections of fire hazard complaints and identifies corrective action necessary for compliance with local, state, and national codes
Inspects sprinkler systems, special fire extinguishing systems and fire alarm systems for current inspection and proper operation
Inspects properties that store, handle and use hazardous materials to ensure compliance with laws, code and regulations for compliance
Investigates fire incidents, hazardous material releases, bomb threats and explosions
Assists Fire Marshal with fire cause and determination of fire related incidents and maintains all records of such incidents
Collects, preserves, logs and secures evidence
Documents all handling of evidence and develops case files and reports
Interprets/explains fire code and permitting requirements and prevention information to multiple parties
Performs special duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position involves prolonged sitting, reaching, walking, twisting, bending, repetitive motions, and standing
Position involves occasional lifting and carrying of up to fifty (50) pounds and exertion of up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force to move objects
Position involves occasionally lifting and carrying of up to one hundred and fifty (150) pounds with assistance (i.e. training dummies, chlorine kits, training props)
Position involves safely operating a motor vehicle and emergency equipment under normal and emergency conditions without any equipment modifications specific to any individual operator
Ability to assess emergency situations and handle extreme stress in crisis situations
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
May be required to work in inclement weather, including extreme heat, cold, and wet conditions
May be exposed to personal and environmentally hazardous conditions
IRREGULAR HOURS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2) years of Fire Investigation experience
