Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, the Fire & Life Safety Inspector/Investigator conducts basic to advanced fire inspections, coordinates and updates the emergency response maps, assists in coordinating and updating pre-incident plans, and conducts fire investigations. Responds to fire and emergency incidents as needed.

JOB SUMMARY

Conducts basic and advanced inspections (e.g. maintenance, permitted, and fire suppression system inspections) to identify and mitigate fire and life safety hazards in the community, in accordance with all applicable laws, codes, ordinances and regulations.

Conducts re-inspections of facilities to verify that required and/or recommended corrections and changes have been made.

Ensures, through enforcement procedures, that individuals, owners, developers, contractors, and architects comply with all federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, regulations, applicable codes and nationally recognized standards related to fire and life safety and hazardous materials, with the intent of reducing or eliminating the incidence of uncontrolled fires and other preventable accidents.

Collaborates with business owners and citizens to obtain voluntary compliance to the City's Fire Code in a variety of affected occupancies.

Comply with quality control procedures for Fire Prevention programs including permitting, plans review, inspections, re-inspections, and other programs which support the Fire Prevention Office.

Participates in fire and life safety sponsored activities and City special events on a rotating basis, as required.

Conducts origin and cause fire investigations in accordance with GFD policies and applicable NFPA standards on a rotating basis, as required.

Maintains department Knox Box program, including coordination with Knox Box owners for updates and changes for building access keys.

Assists in preparing Pre-Incident Plans for potential future emergency operations for various types of emergencies, including site and building diagrams. Inputs plans on computer system for future on-scene accessibility in conjunction with GFD Fire Officers.

Prepares and maintains necessary records, reports, and correspondence, as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by training in fire science, fire technology, building construction, fire prevention, code enforcement, plan review or related field. Two years of fire inspection, code compliance, fire investigation, operational firefighting or an acceptable equivalent combination of relevant experience is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Current State of Colorado Certified Firefighter I or IFSAC equivalent.

  • Possession of International Code Council Fire Inspector II Certificate.

  • Possession of State of Colorado Fire Inspector II Certificate.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months, IFSAC Fire Investigator Certificate.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of employment, International Association of Arson Investigators

  • Fire Investigation Technician (IAAI- FIT) Certification.
  • Current CPR certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and follow oral and written instructions, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare and maintain the necessary records required. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from diverse groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public. Ability to effectively present information to various age groups. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with department members, city employees, other agency members and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to interpret and enforce the City's adopted Fire Code. Ability to define and analyze problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and solutions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to develop a general understanding of applicable municipal codes, fire codes and other codes and laws, as required. Ability to create effective networks and partnerships within the community to promote safety awareness to senior citizens and other vulnerable groups. Ability to develop the knowledge and skills for action planning and developing intervention strategies. Ability to multi-task and prioritize schedule demands. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to understand and navigate required technology including database systems, computers, tablets, smart phones, cameras and other software.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Must pass physical required by organization to meet the physical requirements of a fire inspector and investigator. Must be able to lift, move and carry objects up to fifty (50) pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Must be able to perform effectively in highly stressful emergency circumstances. Must be willing and capable of working in dangerous, hazardous, and adverse conditions, including but not limited to, slippery and uneven surfaces, proximity to moving mechanical equipment, broken glass or other materials, electrical currents, high places, and confined spaces. Work environment may result in exposure to contaminated environments, including but not limited to, hazardous materials, smoke, gases, chemicals, fumes, odors, mists, and dusts, which may require the use of personal protective equipment.
