DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this classification is to train recruits to prevent, suppress and extinguish fires and to perform other related firefighting activities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned recruits, processing recruit concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing recruit performance appraisals. Develops, teaches, and evaluates curriculum related to departmental operations and firefighting techniques

  • Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns training activities: prioritizes and schedules training in order to meet objectives; ensures that recruits have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned tasks; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; and consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise.

  • Implements firefighter training program, to include firefighting techniques, fire prevention theories, fire suppression, hazardous material mitigation, proper rescue activities, and emergency medical services functions: instructs recruits; maintains standards through the effective coordination of activities; and provides recommendations for new hires, transfers and promotions.

  • Coordinates departmental fire training activities: consults with supervisor and other department personnel to review activities, resolve problems, provide recommendations, or receive advice/direction; ensures departmental compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.

  • Prepares, conducts and evaluates training sessions and materials: evaluates current and future training needs; sets training goals and plans training objectives; prepares and presents classroom and physical training programs utilizing a variety of media, resources, and fire equipment and apparatus; and distributes testing material, administers tests, and scores test results.

  • Maintains training files and records: tracks training received by individual firefighters; maintains and submits reports regarding attendance at mandated fire training sessions; and maintains statistical information regarding training requirements. Report Training hours to Georgia Firefighter Standards & Training Counsel.

  • Ensures adherence to established safety procedures: monitors training environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; ensures maintenance and testing of fire equipment and tools; ensures corrective measures are taken to resolve safety hazards or maintenance problems; and maintains related documentation.

  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or GED with vocational or technical training in Fire Science or related field. {Please note: Upon job offer, you will be required to provide proof of education. Be sure to have the appropriate documents readily available.}

Experience:Serving as a current Augusta Fire Department Sergeant, with 6 years of fire service experience or 10 years of fire service experience in a career department outside of Augusta Fire Department

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of firefighting and fire prevention, first aid, and emergency medical care, and handling hazardous materials

  • Proficiency in testing and training program development, teaching, writing reports and public speaking.

  • Mastery of the operation of mechanical firefighting equipment.

  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal fire codes, NFPA guidelines, departmental and county rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Proficiency in building construction and basic mechanics, recognizing potential fire hazards, and interpersonal relations.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Strong supervisory skills

  • Strong people skills

Certification:

  • Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I (II preferred), at least a Georgia EMT Intermediate or Advanced certification or above. CPR certified (Instructor preferred).

  • Must obtain EMS Instructor within one (1) year of hire.

Licensing:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.

This position requires driving a county vehicle and requires the incumbent to be at least 21 years of age.

  • Functional Reasoning:Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

  • Situational Reasoning:Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.

  • Physical Abilities:Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials.

  • Sensory Requirements:Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

  • Environmental Factors:Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, explosives, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.

OTHER

This position requires staff call up in emergency situations and travel from office to other locations.
