Overview

The City of Valdosta Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of full time Fire Lieutenant. This position's major duties include:

• Directing the overall activities of the fire company; establishing goals, objectives and priorities.

• Responding to fire and other incidents; assuming command until relieved by a superior officer.

• Developing and conducting training courses at the company level on a daily basis; serving as coach and mentor to subordinates.

• Ensuring compliance with city and department rules and regulations.

• Participating in all required training and maintaining required professional certifications to ensure operational readiness at all times.

• Preparing a variety of regular and special reports.

• Maintaining all station records, log books and library books.

• Performing station, vehicle, equipment, apparatus and uniform inspections.

• Performing the duties of a Training Officer as assigned; assisting in the development and implementation of training programs; performing needs analysis to identify training deficiencies within the department; ensuring compliance with all local, state, federal and professional requirements and standards; assisting in the development of department standard operating procedures; researching and coordinating external training opportunities for department personnel.

• Performing the duties of a Fire Inspector and Fire Investigator as assigned; inspecting buildings for fire code violations; inspecting building plans for compliance with fire codes; inspecting public buildings for maximum occupancy violations; issuing citations for violations; conducting arson investigations; preparing and delivering fire safety classes.

• Performing related duties.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of

• modern firefighting techniques and equipment;

• laws and regulations relating to the control and prevention of fires;

• department and city policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and regulations;

• computers and job-related software programs;

• capabilities and uses of emergency vehicles and equipment;

• professional standards and industry best practices;

• fire safety principles;

• arson investigation principles and practices

• Skills in operating emergency vehicles and equipment, supervision of personnel, use of radio/communications equipment, planning, organizing, and decision making, public speaking and public relations, oral and written communication.

• Internal Candidates must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Sergeant, unless granted an exception as indicated below.

The Following certifications are required

• NPQ or IFSAC Fire Firefighter II Certification

• Incident Safety Officer

• NPQ IFSAC Fire Officer II Certification

• National Registry and/or Georgia EMT Certification

For this job posting only, a temporary amendment to the ordinance is implemented to allow for the promotion to the rank of Fire Lieutenant with less than two (2) years' experience as a Sergeant
