The Firefighter Intern Training Program is designed to provide a learning environment that allows students a means to acquire hands-on firefighting experience and demonstrate the required skills and techniques needed to effectively respond to emergency situations.As an intern firefighter, you will work 24-hour shifts and be an integral part of the fire crew, gaining the skills needed to become a career firefighter.
The Firefighter Intern Training Program requires candidates to possess physical stamina and discipline under emergency conditions as well as a wide range of mechanical abilities and technical knowledge. The training covers fire suppression, control of hazardous materials, and life safety hazards.
Interns will be required to respond and render basic life support at rescue and/or aid incidents. Non-emergency training activities include fire prevention inspections, training, maintenance and testing of department property and equipment.
This is a shift work position and will require a minimum of 8 (24 hour) shifts per month. This position is not eligible for City benefits.

Essential Job Duties
Interns will become proficient in basic fundamentals of fire suppression activities such as connecting hose to hydrants, extending attack lines, directing fire streams, using fire extinguishers, setting up and operating master stream appliances, and raising and climbing ladders.They will also assist professional firefighters in responses to aid incidents to include controlling bleeding, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, providing airway maintenance and other life support tasks.Interns will also perform rescue operations by using hydraulic rescue tools, cutting torch and gas powered concrete/metal saws for extrication, ropes and other related tools.
Must be a US citizen; 18 years of age or older; demonstrated proficiency in reading and writing in English; completion of high school or GED; possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record; must be in (or scheduled to enter) a related field of study at a regionally accredited college or university; and, successfully pass an entry level skills examination, oral interview process, physical examination and reference/background investigation process.
