FIRE INSPECTOR Salary Range: $20.94 - $34.55 Hourly FLSA Position Class: Non-Exempt Work Schedule:

Varies - 19 hours or less per week, schedule TBD Closing Date: Open Until Filled Job Overview The Fire Inspector performs intermediate technical work in fire prevention; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

NOTE: Required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description.This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the needs of the organization Inspects commercial, industrial, institutional, and other buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire code and life safety code.

Issues safety hazard notices to occupants; performs follow-up inspections to ensure compliance. Conducts fire drills at schools and at public buildings. Plans and coordinates fire education and fire prevention programs for various groups.

Prepares and distributes fire prevention pamphlets, posters, and related materials. Attends training classes and schools to increase expertise and obtain required certifications. Helps train fire personnel concerning inspection practices and fire education.

Prepares reports on inspections and maintains records on occupancies. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education and/or Experience High School diploma or GED Training in fire prevention methods and techniques Six (6) months experience in the fire service Other Requirements Possession of a valid N.C. driver's license or ability to obtain within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment, and administrative assistant techniques. General knowledge of the modern principles and techniques of fire prevention, including inspection, hazards, and elimination of dangerous conditions. General knowledge of the geography of the city, of the laws and ordinances of state and City regarding fire prevention, and of the principles and practices of building construction.

Ability to recognize existing and potential fire hazards in a wide variety of structures and installations. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions. Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports.

Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially. Job Related Physical Requirements This position involves work requiring the employee to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include the use of hands and fingers, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Sufficient vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken work, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness or work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Working Conditions An employee in this position may be subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, subject to hazards including exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; subject to fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases or poor ventilation' subject to exposure to oils and cutting fluids; and may be subject to frequently working in close quarters. An employee in this position could be "reasonably anticipated" as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
