The entrance examination for firefighter will be 100% written. The eligibility register created by the examination will be in effect for a period of six (6) months from the date of the examination.

The applicant must pass the written examination to be considered for further steps in the process.

Examination location: Civic Center, 400 S. Buchanan, Amarillo TX 79101, Regency Room, Entrance #4.

In accordance with the Texas Local Government Code Chapter 143; an additional five points shall be added to the examination grade of an applicant who served in the United States armed forces, received an honorable discharge, and made a passing grade on the examination. The Candidate is responsible for providing a copy of their DD Form 214 to the City of Amarillo Human Resources Office, 601 S Buchanan, Amarillo TX, room 101 prior to the examination deadline. No forms will be accepted after the noted examination deadline.

Starting Pay: $50,806 annually

Summary

Under the direct supervision of a fire officer, this position is responsible for providing the highest level of protection of life and property to both the fire fighters, as well as the citizens through cooperation and innovative support of the mission of the Amarillo Fire Department. Duties include, but are not limited to Structural, Wildland and Aircraft Rescue Firefighting, providing Emergency Medical Services (EMS), performing Emergency Vehicle Extrications, responding to Hazardous Materials, performing fire apparatus and fire station maintenance, and providing public relations education. Employee shall follow all AFD safety policies and procedures.

  • Provides the highest level of protection of life and property to both the fire fighters, as well as the citizens through cooperation and innovative support of the mission of the Amarillo Fire Department.

  • Demonstrates leadership skills commensurate with training and experience.

  • Administers the highest quality of emergency medical services.

  • Pursues and maintains good relations with citizens.

  • Cleans and maintains fire stations, fire apparatus and equipment in accordance with AFD policies.

  • Maintains proficiency in skills and education related to firefighting, EMS, rescue, and hazardous materials.

  • Participates in annual drills and training. Assists with training and providing instruction, as needed.

  • Participates within the Incident Command System (ICS).

  • Assists in the maintenance and testing of fire hydrants.

  • Performs duties and skills necessary for effective structural, EMS, wildland, vehicle accident, Hazardous Materials (HazMat) and ARFF firefighting operations.

  • Stays familiar with and abides by all Fire Dept. and City rules, operating procedures, and directives.

  • Maintains physical fitness condition to meet minimum job requirements, to be evaluated annually.

  • Occasionally works as an acting driver under the supervision of a company officer.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.

  • Knowledge of basic math principles, calculating weight and volumes, and mechanical reasoning

  • Knowledge and ability to safely operate all firefighting apparatus and equipment.

  • Thorough knowledge of modern emergency medical techniques.

  • Thorough knowledge of modern firefighting and rescue techniques.

  • Thorough knowledge of fire department-related laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.

  • Ability to effectively work as a member of a team.

  • Ability to perform strenuous work under hazardous and adverse weather conditions for extended periods.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.

  • Ability to operate basic computer applications and equipment.

  • Ability to meet requirements to achieve and maintain required licenses and certifications.

Entrant eligibility: Eligible candidates must be at least eighteen (18) years of age to test, but not more than 36 years of age on the date of hire. Must pass firefighter entrant's physical, Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT), aerial ladder climb, oral interview(s), background investigation, and criminal history check. Must meet all eligibility requirements for certification as Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Structural Firefighter, and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) EMT-Basic including vaccination requirements established by the City's clinical affiliates to participate in the required EMT training.

Candidates may need proof of additional vaccinations as required by affiliate partners providing education and clinical experience.

Licenses/Education: This position requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a valid Class C Texas driver's license. Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Certified Basic Structural Firefighter, NREMT/TDSHS EMT-Basic certification, and National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-100, IS-200, and IS-700, or ability to achieve both within six (6) months of date of employment. Applicants from out of state shall be required to obtain a Texas driver's license within 90 days of residency.

Physical/Fitness: Must initially pass, and annually thereafter, the OSHA respirator medical evaluation for both air-purifying and air-supplying respirators. While wearing full firefighter protective clothing and SCBA, the firefighter shall complete AFD Operations-level Consumption Test annually. Minimum physical fitness standards include the demonstrated ability to climb six (6) or more flights of stairs, wearing in excess of 50 lbs. of protective clothing, carrying up to 40lbs of equipment/tools, and breathing through a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) while performing search and rescue tasks for victims ranging from newborns to adults weighing over 200 lbs.

Work Shift: Requires working 24-hour shifts with a rotating schedule. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays year-round.

Retention: Employees shall both complete the assigned Position Task Book (PTB) and acquire a Texas Class "B" Exempt Driver's License within one year of employment. Continued employment is also dependent upon successful completion of the probation period, maintaining physical/fitness requirements, and satisfactory job performance ratings.

Personal Appearance Standard: Amarillo Fire Department employees may display non-offensive tattoos on duty. Tattoos will not be allowed anywhere on the eyes, hands, face, head, scalp, or neck. The sole exception to the "no hand tattoo" is a single, wedding band tattoo.

No body piercing shall be visible while any member is on-duty or representing the Department in any official capacity. Alteration to any area of the body that is visible in any authorized uniform or attire that is a deviation from normal anatomical features, and which is not medically required is expressly prohibited. Preferred Qualifications

NREMT/TDSHS EMT- Paramedic, TCFP HAZMAT Technician, TCFP Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighter, NWCG S-130/190 Basic Wildland Firefighter, and/or Texas Class "A" Exempt Driver's License.

Physical Demands

Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to exert up to 200 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 100 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Some of these activities may be done while wearing in excess of 50 lbs. of protective clothing while breathing through a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). The employee must also be able to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, walk, stand, kneel, stoop, sit, feel, finger, grasp, handle, reach, pull, push, lift, speak, see, hear and talk for extended periods. This position also requires the ability to make rational decisions and perform repetitive motions. The employee's mental health shall be of a manner to safely meet the performance standards of firefighter.

The employee spends most of their time working in a physically threatening environment that requires them to make life and death decisions for themselves and others. The employee may be required to perform any of the above activities in extreme temperatures for prolonged periods of time, including below 32 degrees and above 100 degrees F. Most employees will be assigned to a 24-hour shift with the potential for working consecutive shifts. Employees will occasionally be required to work additional hours to meet minimum staffing requirements or could be subjected to emergency callback when large and/or expanding emergencies arise.
