Fire Equipment Technician

The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting internal, online applications for a Fire Equipment Technician. The employee performs intermediate technical work assisting the Administrative District Chief by performing duties assigned him/her in regards to SCBA maintenance program, station supplies, medical supplies, and other tasks under the direct supervision of the Administrative District Chief; performs related functions as required.

Responsibilities include: Maintenance of SCBA belonging to the City. Testing of SCBA to standards established by NFPA 1500, NFPA 1981, OSHA, NIOSH and ANSI shall be performed in compliance of the SCBA program and to Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures.

Program policy development and updating of the SCBA program. Record keeping of all pertinent maintenance work performed as well as the receiving and distribution of supplies related to the Fire Department. This position is non-civil service and does not require firefighter certification.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the NFPA, OSHA, NIOSH and ANSI standards and requirements, and manufacturer requirements for servicing, overhaul and maintenance of self contained breathing apparatus; general knowledge of equipment and supply inventory process; general knowledge of repairing and cleaning personal protective equipment; thorough knowledge of the operation of compressed air breathing apparatus and the related tools and equipment used in the maintenance of same; ability to operate associated repair and maintenance tools and equipment; skill in the use of hand and power tools. Possession and maintenance of a valid unrestricted driver's license issued by the State of Tennessee.

Acceptable Experience and Training: Graduation from high school or GED and considerable experience in the maintenance, overhaul and repair of self contained breathing apparatus; or an equivalent combination of experience and training which provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
