DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK

This is a semi-skilled work in servicing and repairing a variety of Fire Department equipment. Work involves specialized, standardized and usually repetitive tasks, including continual maintenance of breathing apparatus as directed by manufacturer of such apparatus. Work also requires making minor to moderate size repairs and replacement of parts to equipment used. Work includes the maintenance of records showing amounts of parts used as well as time taken to replace parts or repair such equipment. Maintain established inventory of all needed parts on hand at all times. Assignments are performed under close supervision during the training period: after which work may be performed independently. Supervision is received from the Logistics Division Chief (or his designee) of the Fire Department.

ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Fire Equipment Technician. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Supervisor.

  • Service all Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) which includes continual maintenance of regulators, face masks, hoses, back straps, valves, tanks, and all other parts associated with SCBA, SCUBA Equipment.

  • The period of scheduled maintenance dictated by manufacturer.

  • Maintain inventory of SCBA Equipment, all dive equipment including maintenance of tanks filling tanks to specified pressures to include SCBA and Dive Tanks.

  • Maintain all equipment properly marked.

  • Maintaining all tanks hydrostatically tested as specified.

  • Test all ground ladders yearly (or as necessary) these are ladders carried on all fire apparatus.

  • Repair Fire Department Equipment: for example, water appliances and other associated common and specialized equipment.

  • Must be able to have the ability to lift tanks and other equipment in order to be able to perform his or her duties.

  • Maintain records showing work done, parts used, etc. and perform other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Some knowledge of servicing mechanical equipment.

  • Some knowledge and experience of bench test equipment such as meters and scopes.

  • Knowledge of standard tools, materials and practices of the mechanical trades.

  • Some knowledge of care and maintenance of breathing equipment.

  • Ability to supply equipment with air, fuel, oil and other replacement parts.

  • Ability to drive standard automobile vehicles and to operate less complicated mechanism.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to enter accurate information on forms for supplies issued.

  • Skill in the servicing and maintenance of equipment.

  • Mechanical aptitude, coordination and dexterity.

  • Good physical condition.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made by the City to enable an individual to perform the essential duties/functions of the position.

  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.

  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.

  • Work involves working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions.

  • Work involves sitting and standing for long periods of time.

  • Work involves frequent typing, walking and bending, lifting and stooping for short periods of time.

  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 30 pounds.

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.

  • Must be able to wear hard hat/helmet, safety glasses, safety shoes and gloves.

  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, electrical hazards, noise, heights, fumes, and dust are common.

  • The position requires the ability to lift materials in excess of 50 pounds on a regular basis and to work in awkward positions.

  • The incumbent may be required to stand for long periods of time.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Two years of experience at a maintenance facility, and/or a mechanical shop, dive shop, machine shop.

  • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license is required.
