DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK

Performs skilled preventative maintenance and repairs on automobiles, primarily on emergency vehicles and fire rescue apparatus and any other vehicle in need of repair. Work is assigned, reviewed by inspection, and performed under the direction of the Fleet Director.

ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Fire Equipment Mechanic II. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Supervisor.

  • Inspects and tests vehicles, makes visual and operational inspections of vehicles to diagnose problems and fixes problems affecting a variety of gasoline, CNG and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment such as automobiles, police and fire/rescue specialized equipment, emergency generators, etc.

  • Participates in the widest variety of automotive maintenance and repairs from minor work to complete rebuilding, including minor welding and cutting. Interprets and acts upon work orders.

  • Troubleshoots and rebuilds diesel and gasoline motors, grinds valves, replaces and repairs main bearings as well as troubleshoots and repairs transmissions, universal joints, differentials, power take offs, air and hydraulic brakes.

  • Troubleshoots and rebuilds hydraulic pumps, motors, controls, and cylinders, PTO and transfer case.

  • Troubleshoots and rebuilds, repairs and installs automotive electrical components such as starters, generators, distributors, voltage regulators, etc.

  • Provides roadside assistance to operators of City vehicles and tows vehicles to garage as needed.

  • Consults with supervisor to determine costs or repairs and obtain technical assistance.

  • Determines and performs scheduled maintenance on fire and rescue vehicles and apparatus as assigned.

  • Tests and inspects fire apparatus aerial ladders and pumps.

  • Assists in the annual pump, static load, and non-destructive tests.

  • Delivers vehicles to outside vendors and retrieve vehicles when work is completed.

  • Prepares and updates maintenance records and opens and closes on work orders.

  • Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.

  • Conforms with all safety rules which includes wearing and using all appropriate safety equipment.

  • Performs other related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to be periodically scheduled for on-call duty with an on-site arrival time of no less than 1 hour form the time of notification.

  • Thorough understanding of the methods, materials and tools of the automotive mechanic and fire apparatus and equipment trade is necessary.

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and proper use of tools and machinery is essential.

  • Knowledge of the principles of operation gasoline and diesel engines, automatic transmissions, electrical systems and brake systems, fluid couplings and the repair and maintenance characteristics of a variety of fire apparatus and equipment and other public works equipment is required.

  • Thorough knowledge of all applicable NFPA regulations pertaining to the service and repair of fire apparatus vehicles and equipment.

  • The incumbent must possess the ability to diagnose and correct problems detected in machinery.

  • The ability to understand and act upon oral and written instructions including diagrams is essential. Organizational skills used to maintain basic shop records and prepare reports is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made by the City to enable an individual to perform the essential duties/functions of the position.

  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.

  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.

  • Work involves working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions.

  • Work involves sitting and standing for long periods of time.

  • Work involves frequent typing, walking and bending, lifting and stooping for short periods of time.

  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 30 pounds.

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.

  • Must be able to wear hard hat/helmet, safety glasses, safety shoes and gloves.

  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, electrical hazards, noise, heights, fumes, and dust are common.

  • The position requires the ability to lift materials in excess of 50 pounds on a regular basis and to work in awkward positions.

  • The incumbent may be required to stand for long periods of time.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum of five (5) years as an Emergency vehicle Technician (EVT) certified and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Technician on light trucks and fire apparatus, and heavy equipment.

  • IAFC Certification is preferred.

  • Fire Apparatus Technician Master Level III required.

  • Ambulance Technician Master Level III required.

  • Valid Florida Driver's License with Class A CDL.

  • Furnish own tools and repair equipment.

  • A comparable amount of training of experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirement.
