The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Fire Equipment Mechanic.This position performs skilled major and minor mechanical overhaul and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel automotive vehicles, fire trucks, apparatus and other non-automotive fire suppression equipment; performs a variety of technical tasks related to assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Fire Equipment Mechanic I --This is the entry level class in the Fire Equipment Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Equipment Mechanic II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. This class may be used as a training class or the class may contain positions wherein employees perform routine tasks on a permanent basis and therefore remain at an entry level.

Fire Equipment Mechanic II -- This is the full journey level class in the Fire Equipment Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Equipment Mechanic I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned and from the Fire Equipment Mechanic III by not being assigned the most complex tasks and duties and not being expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, candidates have prior experience.

Fire Equipment Mechanic III --This is the advanced journey level class in the Fire Equipment Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Equipment Mechanic II by the performance of the most complex and difficult types of tasks and duties, including leading, training and reviewing the work of lower level classes. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all work unit procedures.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Fire Equipment Mechanic I -- Receives immediate supervision from higher level staff.

Fire Equipment Mechanic II -- Receives general supervision from higher level staff.

Fire Equipment Mechanic III -- Receives general supervision from higher level staff. Exercises functional and technical supervision over lower level staff.

TYPE OF EXAMINATION:A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. Thesupplemental questionsare the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date.The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list.

SELECTIONPROCESS:Final candidate selection will include list placementand will include hiring interview. Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check,to include education and employment verification,and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Essential Functions:

• Diagnose mechanical problems in the various Fire Services Department automotive vehicles and related fire suppression equipment; perform major and minor overhaul and repair of fire engines, perform routine service, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment ladder trucks, service trucks and emergency medical vehicles; work on both gasoline and diesel engines; perform maintenance and repair work on heavy duty centrifugal pumps.

• Service, maintain and repair equipment such as fire hoses, fire hose couplings and nozzles, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and other life support equipment, air compressors and auxiliary lighting power plants.

• Repair and maintain small, lightweight fire fighting equipment such as chain and circular saws, fire axes, pikes and hydraulic jacks.

• Inspect and test fire fighting equipment and apparatus for general or required operating conditions and efficiency.

• Assist in the training of fire fighting personnel in the operation, care and maintenance of engines, trucks and automobiles; assist in training lower level mechanic staff.

• Assist in maintaining service and maintenance records of vehicles and equipment; assist in maintaining inventory records.

• Test-drive, deliver, and retrieve vehicles which involve the driving of vehicles on public roadways.

Marginal Functions:

• Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as needed.

• May respond to fire alarms to maintain equipment in service.

• May service and repair fire hydrants, disassembling and replacing worn or damaged parts.

• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Fire Equipment Mechanic I

Experience:

Four years experience in the service and repair of cars, trucks and automotive equipment, including some experience in diesel and electrical and electronic systems repair.

Training:

Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of a Nevada Class B Commercial Drivers License, as well as an "N" endorsement (Tank Vehicle) within 6 months of date of hire, and maintenance thereafter. (Upload as part of this application, if already possess)

Possession of the National Institute for Automotive Excellence (NIASE) certification in either engine repair or heavy duty gasoline engines on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter. (Upload a scanned copy as part of this application)

Within eighteen months of appointment, possession of NIASE certification in brakes, and maintenance thereafter.

Fire Equipment Mechanic II

Experience:

Five years experience in the major and minor repair of light and heavy duty automotive equipment, including electrical and electronic systems repair and at least one year of heavy duty diesel mechanical repair; or two years working in the City of Las Vegas as a Fire Equipment Mechanic I.

Training:

Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of a Nevada Class B Commercial Drivers License, as well as an "N" endorsement (Tank Vehicle) within 6 months of date of hire, and maintenance thereafter.

Possession of the National Institute for Automotive Excellence (NIASE) certification in diesel engines on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Within eighteen months of appointment, possession of NIASE certification in electrical systems, and maintenance thereafter.

Fire Equipment Mechanic III

Experience:

Six years experience in the major repair of light and heavy duty automotive equipment, including diesel mechanical, electrical and electronic systems repair; or two years experience working in the City of Las Vegas as a Fire Equipment Mechanic II.

Training:

Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of a Nevada Class B Commercial Drivers License, as well as an "N" endorsement (Tank Vehicle) within 6 months of date of hire, and maintenance thereafter.

Possession of the National Institute for Automotive Excellence (NIASE) certification in automatic transmissions on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Within eighteen months of appointment, possession of NIASE certification in air conditioning, and maintenance thereafter.
