DESCRIPTION

This recruitment will be used to fill a vacancy within our prevention department and will establish an eligibility list for our Fire Cadet assigned specifically to our prevention department.

To be considered for this position, candidates must attach a resume and all required certifications.

The department will accept up to the first 250 qualified applications.

This is a part-time entry-level work-training program for those interested in a fire service prevention career. The fire cadets perform support functions primarily centered on fire prevention and emergency management.

The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification; it is only a representative summary of some of the essential duties and responsibilities specific to prevention.

  • hazardous material inspection program support
  • fire prevention outreach and engagement
  • conducting hazard reduction inspecting

Knowledge & Education

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

  • Current CPR Certification at the "professional rescuer" or "healthcare provider" level.

  • Candidates with a Fire Inspector 1A or 1B are highly desirable.

Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Candidates must possess a valid Class C California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability.

  • Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent Resident Alien meeting the

requirements of Government Code Section 1031 (A) and 1031.5.

The closing date may also be extended, or the job may be re-posted if an insufficient number of applications is received during the initial posting period.

Candidates that successfully pass the screening process and are deemed to possess the most desirable qualifications may be invited to the in-person oral interviews tentatively scheduled for Thursday, July 18, 2024. The top scoring candidates from the oral interview will be placed on an eligibility list from which the department may hire.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a reference / background check including livescan and pass a pre-employment medical examination (which will include a drug/alcohol screening).

The Organization

The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. Policymaking and legislative authority is vested in the City Council, consisting of a Mayor and four Council Members. Members of the City Council are elected by District to a four-year term. The Mayor is selected by the Council and serves as the presiding officer for one year.

The City is organized into the following departments/organizational units: Community Services, City Manager's Office, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Risk Management, Police, Planning & Development, Public Works and Utilities. Oversight of these departments is divided between the City Manager and two Assistant City Managers.

The City's total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2024 is $369.9 million with a General Fund operating budget of $194.5 million. Corona enjoys a workforce of 860 dedicated employees who provide high quality services to its residents and visitors each day.

Temporary/part-time employment status does not qualify for City benefits, except for those required by law.

The City does not belong to the Social Security system. Therefore, enrollment in the Nationwide PST 457 retirement program is mandatory and requires a contribution of 7.5% of base earnings. The City contributes 1.3% and the employee contributes 6.2% of base earnings.

Most part-time shifts for temporary/part-time employees must not exceed 999 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). If an employee is an active CalPERS member they may work up to 28 hours per week.

There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.
