Students attending high school or college can gain experience working part-time with the Midland Fire Department

Essential Job Duties:

This program allows students the opportunity to work in several areas of the Fire Department, including operations, training, fire prevention and investigation/inspection.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:Ability to sit, stand and move self to various buildings.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in high school or posses a high school diploma or GED.

  • Be at least 17 years of age and have not reached their 25th birthday.

  • Posses a valid Texas driver license.

  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.

  • Meet any and all other requirements for employment with the City of Midland

Demonstrate and interest in the fire and/or emergency medical services through previous or curren volunteer experience, educational history, and/or other means.

IF HIGH SCHOOL ENROLLED

  • Must be a student in good standing.

  • Maintain good attendance and grades.

  • Remain enrolled until graduation.

OTHER APPLICANTS

Enroll and maintain a minimum of nine (9) semester college hours during each of the fall and spring semesters. Remedial or non-credit labs do not qualify toward the nine (9) hour minimum.

Maintain a G.P.A. of 2.0 for all course work.

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains division budget records by tracking and logging expenses. Essential Job Duties: * Answer the phone, takes messages, greets visitors and assists citizens with questions or concerns regarding fire department services. * Maintains the division calendar and coordinates division work schedules and assignments as needed. * Initiates and processes division purchases. * Reviews statistical incident data, develops and submits monthly fire and incident reports. * Develops, types, and files various professional internal and external correspondence. * Maintains filing system database and regularly audits said records for accuracy and usability. * Plans and organizes community group meetings with regards to prevention activities. * Reviews and researches prevention education needs within the community relative to fire and life safety. * Performs a variety of administrative and research functions related to organizational policies, procedures, and practices. * Performs related duties as required. Required Qualifications: Employee works with the public, other employees, and various outside agencies and contractors directly when acting as a receptionist, answering inquiries, processing information or making referrals to the proper staff person. May be required to speak publically. Ability to effectively communicate with employees, management, and citizens. Must possess good telephone and public relations skills. Ability to read and understand manuals and reports in order to record activities or maintain other records. Skill in the operation and maintenance of a number of office machines and equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers and skill in typing and filing is required. Basic familiarization with popular Microsoft Office software products required. Ability to learn and use system software such as payroll, accounting, requisitioning, personnel, and fire and EMS reporting. Organizational skills are a must. Bilingual speaker a plus. High school diploma or equivalent plus required. Experience working in an office environment is also desirable. May be required to pass a typing test with a minimum score of 40 words per minute and successfully complete a grammar and a spelling test.
