Assist the Fire Division Chief with overseeing the activities of a division within the Fire Department, including fire suppression and emergency response. Develop and supervise assigned personnel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities- The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Respond to calls for fires and other emergency situations. Serve as Incident Commander for large or serious emergencies; evaluate conditions at scene and call for additional assistance as needed. Coordinate fire investigation activities.
  • Develop and supervise staff by setting goals, providing regular feedback, documenting performance, and conducting annual performance appraisals.
  • Coordinate personnel assignments, including daily roster of employee locations and responsibilities, constant staffing, approval of leave forms, and vacation list.
  • Assist Division Chief with daily operations, including apparatus repair and maintenance, training, equipment testing, and fire inspections.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports on equipment, fires, accidents, injuries, and training.
  • Schedule regular and emergency repairs of vehicles and equipment; ensure preventative maintenance has been conducted.

MUST BE A CURRENT CITY EMPLOYEE HAVING SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A PROBATIONARY PERIOD.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate Degree preferred.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license, CPR certification, and EMT license.
  • Minimum seven years of related experience with at least one year as a Company Officer or Assistant Fire Marshal (meeting all required qualifications for the Assistant Fire Marshal position).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position

  • Knowledge of fire suppression and first responder methods, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of fire and emergency response equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of fire equipment and fire suppression and first responder activities.
  • Ability to assess emergency response needs at a fire or other emergency scene.
  • Knowledge of fire codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of City streets and locations.
  • Knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques, as well as the ability to plan, assign, and evaluate the work of subordinate personnel.
  • Knowledge of identification, prediction, protection, and elimination of hazards.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and evaluate the work of subordinates.
  • Must meet physical standards commensurate with other Chief Officers.
  • Clear verbal communication skills and ability to give and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to interact with other City employees, public safety agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to teach applicable topics to both large and small groups.
  • Ability to use and wear all required personal protective gear and equipment.

Work Environment- Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job

  • Varying, inclement outdoor weather conditions and in extreme heat and cold non-weather conditions.
  • Exposure to mechanical and other hazardous fluids, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Work in high, dangerous places and near mechanical moving parts.
  • Exposure to loud or very loud noise.
  • Work in hazardous traffic conditions.

  • Exceptional visual acuity including clarity of vision at 20 feet or more and 20 inches or less, three-dimensional vision, and ability to distinguish colors.
  • Precise hand-eye coordination to operate equipment.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear, stand, and walk while performing office work and responding to emergency situations.
  • Frequently required to drive, grasp, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl during emergency situations.
  • Repetitive wrist, hand, and/or finger movement while operating fire equipment or office machines.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Hours/Days

48-on; 96-off rotating, potential emergency on call or Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.
