Intra: Limited to civil service employees in the Kauai Fire Department
Eligible lists may be used for temporary and permanent vacancies for the class of work during the life of the eligible list. Temporary appointments may lead to conversion to permanent employment.
Directs a major bureau of the Kauai Fire Department; administers the comprehensive fire fighting, search and rescue, and hazardous materials operations bureau; or administers the support services bureaus including fire prevention and inspection, training and ocean safety; provides executive assistance to the Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief; and performs other related duties required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements

Your possession of the required amount of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for the position. Overall paid or unpaid experience must be of such scope and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Note: Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour work weeks.
Part-time experience must be pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours per week is equivalent to six months of experience. In addition, hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours per week is equivalent to one year, not one and one-half years.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university, and ten (10) years of progressively responsible fire fighting experience, four (4) of which shall have been as a Fire Captain or higher in the Kauai Fire Department.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license, (Type 3).
Knowledge of: fire organization and administration including supervision, training and budget preparation and control; personnel management; principles, methods and techniques of fire fighting, and types of uses of pertinent equipment; local and State rules, regulations, ordinances, and laws relating to fire department operations; department policies, rules, practices, and procedures; and the geography and physical characteristics of the County of Kauai and adjacent waters.
Ability to: plan, organize, direct and administer the functions an extensive fire fighting and search and rescue operation; apply principles and knowledge in developing an effective fire fighting, rescue and hazardous materials operation; conduct inspections and investigations of performance and conditions; apply good judgment in making decisions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates and the general public; keep records and prepare reports.
Special Working Conditions: irregular hours, shift and weekend work and exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions as required.
