Note: The normal starting pay for this position is the minimum of the pay range listed above. A higher rate of pay may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City's step placement policy.

Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered.

This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.

JOB SUMMARY

This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Maintenance Services Division of the Fire Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. However, an eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies in the department, per provisions of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. The primary purpose of this classification is to perform skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of various automobiles and trucks, including specialized firefighting vehicles and equipment. Employees of this classification must possess the required knowledge and skills prior to assuming the position. Essential job functions include: maintaining and repairing various types of automobiles, trucks, fire engines, fire trucks, fire pumps, hydraulic equipment, and other specialized, heavy equipment; diagnosing equipment malfunctions; estimating repair costs; writing service orders; providing specialized technical support and training to other maintenance and repair staff; and performing related duties as required and assigned. The employee must exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment and be able to effectively convey technical information to co-workers and other City employees. Work products are evaluated periodically by a supervisor through review of records and reports and inspection of work performed.

VETERANS PREFERENCE

Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of and skill in performing the duties of a Master Mechanic.

  • Knowledge of fire ladders, engines, pumps, and transfer cases.

  • Knowledge of and skill in applying automotive operation and repair principles, methodologies, and techniques to work performed.

  • Skill in diagnosing minor and major malfunctions of gasoline/diesel automotive equipment.

  • Skill in providing verbal instructions and physical demonstrations of automotive and fire equipment repairs and maintenance procedures or techniques.

  • Skill in communicating with others using tact and diplomacy.

  • Skill in maintaining accurate records.

  • Skill in reading and interpreting technical information, diagrams, and instructions.

  • Skill in preparing accurate cost estimates for required services and/or repairs.

  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL).

  • Possession of a current Master Mechanic certification.

  • Possession of current Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I and Level II certifications.

  • Ability and willingness to maintain Master Mechanic and EVT Level I and Level II certifications.

NOTE: Employee must provide own hand tools.

NOTE: The employee will be required to possess or obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver License within twelve (12) months from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a valid Class B Commercial Driver License within twelve (12) months from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion.

NOTE: The employee will be required to possess or obtain Master Mechanic and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I and II certifications within twenty-four (24) months of employment/promotion. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining Master Mechanic and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I and II certifications within twenty-four (24) months from the date of hire/promotion.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Frequent exposure to fumes and gases (i.e., carbon monoxide). May require wearing self- contained breathing apparatus.

  • Subject to working one of three eight-hour shifts; and may be required to work on-call duty, holidays, and/or overtime.

  • Subject to frequent, local travel.

Note: Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Strength enough to lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Flexibility enough to bend, twist, and reach when performing job-related tasks.

  • Mobility enough to continuously move one's self from place to place during the workday.

  • Arm-hand steadiness and manual dexterity enough to use hand and power tools to maintain and repair automotive parts and equipment.

  • Near vision enough to read manuals, schematics, labels, etc. and to work with small parts and wires.

  • Visual color discrimination enough to accurately match color-coded wires, etc.

  • Hearing enough to determine the location of sounds from equipment or parts such as engine- blocks, transmissions, carburetors, etc.

  • Hearing enough to distinguish between environmental sounds such as vehicles in motion, tappets pinging in an automobile engine, etc.

  • Ability to climb ground and aerial ladders to heights in excess of 100 feet.

OTHER DETAILS

Note: An eligibility list will be established from this posting consisting of applicants who receive a score of 70 percent or better. Multiple selection procedures may be utilized; a minimum of 70 percent or better will be required on each; and the results of multiple selection procedures will be equally weighted. The eligibility list will be in effect for 180 days from the date of the final selection procedure and will be used to fill future vacancies.

Pay Method: City employees are required to receive pay electronically, either via direct deposit or pay card.

If the position accepted includes a driver license (commercial or non-commercial) Job Requirement, the City of Oklahoma City will obtain a Motor Vehicle Report for internal and external applicants.

If the position accepted is safety sensitive and/or a driving position, internal and external applicants will be provided a copy of the City of Oklahoma City's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy prior to being directed for a drug test.

If the position accepted is cyber security sensitive, internal and external applicants will be subject to a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Interstate Identification Index (III) Fingerprint Background check. Additionally, employees in this job classification must complete Level 4 Security Awareness Training and pass an online certification test.
