What You Will Do

Are you ready for the challenges and rewards of an emergency response role? As an important contributor to the Department of Fire and EMS, you will operate emergency vehicles to support response efforts. Under the direction of the Station Lieutenant, your expertise in emergency response will ensure that the citizens of the County are supported and protected. You will greatly impact the County's ability to maintain firefighting and rescue capabilities.

Essential Duties

  • Drive assigned apparatus to and position at calls safely and effectively. Operate fire trucks, engines, medics/ambulances and other related fire and emergency response equipment.

  • Conduct apparatus inspections and operational readiness testing. Perform basic preventive maintenance and remove equipment from service as necessary.

  • Operate specialized fire suppression equipment. Perform specialized rescue services using heavy duty equipment and tools.

  • Provide basic life support emergency medical care.

  • Coordinate the creation and maintenance of pre-plans and area maps. Complete timely, detailed and accurate reports.

  • Participate in training, drills and other related activities.

  • Assist with administration of the on-duty shift. Complete daily fire/EMS station duties.

  • Invite collaboration and seek learning opportunities. Proactively assist peers to create a supportive work environment.

  • Ensure all work is complete and timely to support department goals. Evaluate feedback and procedures to improve efficiency.

You Might Be a Good Fit If

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)

  • Validated EMT and fire service field experience

  • One or more years of experience driving Class B fire apparatus

  • A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirement.

Licenses

  • Class B non-commercial license

Certifications

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification by Maryland/MIEMSS, reciprocal state, or National Registry EMT

  • Emergency Vehicle Operator course (MFRI, VFIS, or equivalent)

  • Firefighter I certification by MFSPQB, Pro-Board, IFSAC, or DOD

  • Firefighter II certification by MFSPQB, Pro-Board, IFSAC, or DOD

  • FADO Pump Apparatus Driver/Operator certification by MFSPQB

  • FADO Aerial Apparatus Driver/Operator certification by MFSPQB or must complete within one year of hire date

  • FADO Mobile Water Supply certification by MFSPQB or must complete within one year of hire date

  • Common Passenger Vehicle Technical Rescuer -Technician or Rescue Technician (site operations, vehicle, and machinery) certification by MFSPQB, Pro Board, IFSAC, or DOD (or must obtain within one year of hire date)

  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800

  • Specified certifications, licenses and physical abilities stated above must be maintained throughout term of employment.

Additional Information

  • Must be able to safely perform the duties of the position without posing a threat to the health and safety of themselves and others.

  • 24 on, 72 off schedule. Must be available for all shifts as assigned and on-call as needed.

  • Will be required to work outside of standard hours.

  • Facial hair must be maintained to properly wear job-specific safety equipment and pass SCBA fit test throughout employment.

  • Requires criminal background check as condition of employment.

  • Requires medical clearance consistent with NFPA 1582.

  • All applicants offered this position will be required to sign a nicotine abstinence agreement.

  • Employees shall be subject to alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing, including but not limited to random testing.

  • Must meet Carroll County Risk Management driver eligibility requirements

Working Conditions

  • May frequently be exposed to fumes, flammable items, sharp objects or rough edges, and loud noises; and occasionally work in temperatures below 40 degrees or greater than 80 degrees, work in confined spaces, and occasionally exposed to airborne particles, blood, bodily fluids or blood borne pathogens, toxic or corrosive chemicals, exposed electric wiring or components, or noxious odors

  • Will frequently be required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, and lift up to 25 lbs; and occasionally required to bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb ladders, reach above, at and below shoulder height, lift up to 100 lbs, and carry over 100 lbs

  • Must wear appropriate PPE as required.
