MassArt is the oldest, and one of two public, state supported, independent colleges of art and design in the country. We are humbled by the responsibility of serving the public, and the broad demographic of students from across the Commonwealth, the region, the nation, and beyond. MassArt seeks to be a leader in increasing diversity within its curriculum and support programs, as well as in its faculty, staff, and student populations. As we aim to promote an inclusive environment, we seek candidates who can actively participate in our shared goals and encourage applicants to apply and to identify their strengths in this area. The ideal candidate will be capable of teaching both innovative and traditional approaches to painting, and engaging a diverse student body. We are searching for colleagues with demonstrated teaching and mentoring abilities who will help our students develop an understanding of critical discourse, cultural history, and creative and social issues. The successful applicant will also be committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success.
The MassArt FA2D Department focuses on the principal means of artistic exploration and expression in teaching its undergraduate and graduate students. The foundation of the Painting program is the intensity of the studio learning experience. Our program reflects a belief that significant studio time is critical to the growth and development of its individual student artists. Major studio sections meet ten hours each week for each of the six semesters of a student's sophomore, junior, and senior year. The Painting faculty represent diverse conceptual approaches to image-making, a wide range of cultural and educational backgrounds, and hands-on technical expertise in numerous art-making processes. That said, all MassArt Painting Majors proceed through a foundational sophomore year of painting based on the tools and language of that art form.
A major goal of the Painting program is to prepare our graduates to become independent practicing artists. We want our students to think critically about their own work, to apply the education they receive in our department, and ultimately to advance their individual skills and ideas after college in order to succeed in the professional world. Our curriculum is designed with these goals in mind. The FA2D faculty consider painting and printmaking to be allied and interrelated disciplines and encourage students to investigate creative possibilities that cross boundaries and media.
