Mecklenburg County Finance Department is looking to fill several Accountant positions as we look to expand our Financial Reporting team. The Financial Reporting Team is responsible for:

  • The County's annual audit and preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and related work papers.

  • Preparation of various internal and external financial reports

  • Analysis of financial data and forecasts

  • Various reconciliations including bank and investment reconciliations

  • Month-end and year-end close out

  • Processing/approving transactions in the financial system

  • Maintaining records for the County's capital assets and related reporting

  • Ad Hoc financial presentations and projects

POSITION SUMMARY

Perform professional, complex, and/or advance accounting work (dependent on level) involving the preparation and/or maintenance of financial or related records.

Accountant II

Salary Range: $55,120- $72,344

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Minimum of three years in Accounting or Finance.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.

Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted: Yes

  • Prepare, review, analyze, and submit a variety of reports, reconciliations, communications, schedules, tables, and/or statements to and from internal departments, financial institutions, and external agencies

  • Resolve moderately complex reconciliations and account analysis problems requiring in-depth research

  • Audit, compile, calculate, and analyze a variety of financial data and transactions

  • Participate in developing and implementing financial procedures related to data accumulation, reporting, and archiving

  • Prepare a variety of financial and accounting records and reports including revenue and expenditure reports, executive summaries, and aging reports

  • Maintain records of account entries by compiling and analyzing accounting activities

  • Oversee specific accounting operations, or a complex segment of the accounting function

  • Coordinate with other departments to assess needs and requirements for accounting matters

Accountant III

Salary Range: $66,696 - $87,537

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Minimum of four years in Accounting or Finance.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.

Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted: Yes

  • Prepare, review, analyze, and submit a variety of complex and/or special reports, reconciliations, work papers, communications, schedules, tables, and/or statements to and from internal departments, financial institutions, and external agencies

  • Provide support to County departments by resolving financially related problems and reviewing internal controls

  • Resolve complex reconciliations and account analysis problems requiring in-depth research

  • Prepare financial projections and conduct related forecasting for future project needs for the County

  • Conduct quantitative analyses of information affecting budgets, expenses, and other financial projects

  • Report current or expected financial performance and creates financial models to guide decision making

  • Analyze cash flow, expenditures, revenue, depreciation, and investments to make recommendations for action and/or modifications regarding financial procedures, plans, and controls

  • Assist departments with technical support in policies, procedures, budget development, and financial standards

  • Prepare reports such as balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other documents that project the organization's financial position

  • Oversee specific accounting operations, or complex segment of accounting functions; and review financial statements for completeness, accuracy, and compliance

  • Ability to analyze data, create reports and/or presentations and communicate results internally and to other County departments

Accountant IV

Salary Range: $80,701 - $105,919

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Minimum of six years in Accounting or Finance

Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration

Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted: Yes

  • Perform advanced accounting work reviewing financial records, preparing projections and creating reports and presentations; provide guidance to other accountants. This lead position, with a high degree of complexity, is responsible for coordinating and assisting departments in their development, administration, and monitoring of financial records, budgets and expenditures.

  • Coordinate with internal departments for requested training and support and external reporting agencies to assess needs and requirements for fiscal monitoring and reporting

  • Review data collected and monitors budgets to provide accurate and timely financial information to internal departments and outside reporting agencies

  • Perform program and/or account monitoring and evaluation of internal departments and/or subcontractors and recommends and installs new procedures, methods, and systems

  • Assist with the preparation, maintenance, and administration of budgets; manage approved budgets; monitor expenditures; analyze budgets; prepare reports of analyses and findings; and prepare budget amendments and journal entries as necessary

  • Conduct financial reviews and analysis and prepares related reports of findings and recommendations

  • Prepare a variety of financial and accounting reports including revenue, and expenditure reports

  • Perform special projects, analysis and reports related to the financial condition, and accounting records

  • Prepare, review and compiles grant fund requests; administer and prepare necessary paperwork for awarded grants

  • Serve as consultant/advisor to division director and managers regarding budgeting, accounting and financial operations, policies, and procedures. Advises division staff on record keeping and accounting problems and responds to requests for information and/or assistance

  • Conduct internal reviews and audits within the division to ensure all grant compliance, accounting, financial and budgeting activities comply with grants, approved budget, and County financial and administrative policies and procedures

  • Ability to analyze data, create reports and/or presentations and communicate results County leadership and external agencies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

  • North Carolina's Certified Local Government Finance Officer (CLGFO)

  • GFOA's Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO)Two years of governmental accounting experience including financial statement preparation, account reconciliation and analysis and bank reconciliations.

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Governmental Accounting Standard Board Statements and Technical Pronouncements, and North Carolina Statutes for local government finance.
