Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Financial Counseling Supervisor/Manager and/or Financial Clearance Director, provides guidance and assistance to patients, various internal UMass staff, physician offices and third party vendors regarding financial assistance programs.

The Financial Counselor is charged with the responsibility of interacting with patients, the community and outside agencies in a professional manner in keeping with the Mission and Vision of UMMHC.

Position Qualifications:

Requirements-Demonstrates knowledge of various government medical assistance programs. Must pass the Application Counselor Certification exam within 3 months of hire.

Cross campus and evening outreach coverage is required. May need to remain after shift ends to complete the application process with a patient. Must have own transportation to travel to different coverage areas.

Campus location may vary dependent on department needs. Extensive face to face and telephone patient contact.

High School Graduate required. Associate or Bachelor's degree in Business, Social Services or related field preferred.

Certified Application Counselor (CAC)certification required within 3 months of hire as a condition of employment. Minimum of 2 years of experience in Healthcare, accounts receivable, or related field required with a Minimum of 2year of experience in Financial Counseling and/or Medical Billing preferred.

English speaking, reading and writing skills required; bilingual preferred. Proficient dataentry skills with attention to detail. Effective communication and customer service skills both verbal and written.

Ability to use specialized applications software and computers systems for patient registration and scheduling. Demonstrated knowledge of business office products and medical terminology.

Holiday and/or weekend shift work, as well as afterhours coverage as required. Must provide own transportation.

Ability to work in high volume, teamoriented environment. Ability to take directions and work independently.

Departmentspecific competencies, including agespecific competencies, and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with the position incumbents.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of duties to ensure that reimbursement is obtained for medical services provided to the uninsured, and underinsured patient population.

  • Interviews, screens, counsels and orients the appropriate patient population and members of the community, in a variety of settings on multiple campuses, regarding available financial assistance options.

  • Processes all necessary paperwork and followup for appropriate programs according to state, federal and hospital regulations and policies.

  • Obtains appropriate confidential and medical information to establish eligibility for various financial assistance programs.

  • Facilitates patient understanding of health access options including but not limited to: eligibility rules, coverage types, products and plans available through MassHealth, the Health Connector, Medicaid Managed Care, and the Health Safety Net program.

Community Healthlink (CHL) is looking for a relief (0-20 hrs/wk) residential counselor in Worcester, MA. Thayer Detox is an acute, intensive, inpatient treatment program for men and women 18 and older who suffer from substance use disorders. The program provides individual comprehensive case management services to each client along with at least four treatment groups per day, run by all team members (residential counselors/recovery specialists, case managers, clinicians, nurses). Detox also offers Enhanced Acute Treatment Services (EATS) to support individuals also dealing with active symptoms of a mental illness. Services for these clients include daily individual counseling as well as a psychiatric consultation with an MD or NP. The Residential Counselor works closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide structure and support to clients in the Detox Program. The RC monitors clients 24/7 to ensure safety for all. RC's also facilitates groups to encourage and motivate our clients to keep fighting for their recovery If you are looking to give back to the community and help others, this relief residential counselor position maybe the one for you. A relief residential counselor can work 0-20 hours a week depending on the program's need. In this flexible position, there are no set shifts, and staff are scheduled or called as needed to cover empty shifts. This gives you the opportunity to help others without the commitment Responsibilities * Must have the ability to work various shifts and weekends * Provide supervision of clients while on the unit * Demonstrate appropriate and respectful interactions with patients and the community as outlined in agency policies * Complete all appropriate paperwork in a timely and accurate manner * Facilitate client intakes and discharges when necessary * Search clients' belongings and supervise drug test screenings as needed * Transport clients to and from appointments as required * Facilitate psycho-social groups for the clients as requested * Demonstrate positive communication skills in dealing with clients, visitors, and other members of the health care team * Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
