The Office of Financial Assistance invites candidates for the Financial Assistance Counselor. This position counsels and supports student borrowers consistent with federal requirements and default management procedures. This position is also responsible for performing tasks such as packaging federal aid, processing federal Pell grants, Federal Direct loans, and institutional scholarships. Greeting customers as they come in and assisting them with their needs. Assist the Director, other Financial Assistance Counselors, Verification Specialist, and process Veterans Assistance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors, maintains and/or improves the college cohort default rate

  • Identifies and submits incorrect and uncorrected data challenges to the Department of Education

  • Contacts delinquent borrowers and presents options for avoiding default

  • Collaborates with other departments and external agencies in managing the institution's default rate and financial literacy initiatives

  • Maintains current knowledge of federal Title IV regulations, state rules and institutional financial aid policies

  • Develops and presents strategic training to internal and external staff on default prevention and delinquency management

  • Attends workshops and conferences requiring out-of-town travel

  • Employee may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically delineated in this description

  • Analyze ISIR data for awarding, award all types of federal aid, and collect all necessary forms from students.

  • Manage a specific alpha split of students and provide high level customer services through all HSSU and financial aid processes.

  • Greet and assist students at the front desk with excellent customer service.

  • Answer HSSU and Financial Aid questions and assist students with computer tasks related to the FAFSA, MPN, Entrance Counseling, etc.

  • Assist with writing and maintaining correspondence to students and complete mail merges into WORD and e-mail to mail to large groups of students.

  • Manage/Balance office supply budget and ensure that the office is always stocked with necessary supplies (i.e. toner, paper, facial tissues, post-its, etc.).

  • Manage file/storage room by ensuring all student files are current and all necessary paperwork is properly filed in a timely manner.

  • Supervise student workers assigned to the office by delegating tasks and teaching the basics about office professionalism and executing clerical duties.

  • Maintain office website whenever necessary. Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples necessarily include all the duties performed.

  • Manage the processes for hiring FWS students, timesheets, payroll, and all aspects of the FWS program

  • Manage the SAP process by identifying and notifying students, collecting appeals and ensuring that the SAP committee reviews and makes decisions based on the policy of the DE and HSSU.

  • Manage the process for the certification of VA through VA Once and managing all aspects of the VA programs.

  • Experience with mail merge

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree required

  • At least one year work experience in an area related to higher education, student personnel services or finances.

You will make contact with members that have collection and delinquent accounts, making follow-up telephone calls and/or late payment reminders. Determine the reason for the past due condition of loans. You will educate members on the importance of making timely payments and develop a plan to bring their loan current. Make recommendations on what actions that should be taken if the loan is in default. Create correspondence for members and create/update various reports for the Members Financial Counseling Department using word processing and spreadsheet software. Essential Functions: * Work active collection accounts and contact delinquent accounts either by telephone or by mailing correspondence to determine the reason for default on loans * Take appropriate action to bring accounts current, including extension agreements, loan workouts, or setting up payment arrangements * Take and maintain detailed written accounts of all communications and/or actions made in attempt to collect on delinquent accounts * Generate collection notices and right to cures as they are required on delinquent accounts * Document in the collection notes, payments received and forward payments to the Member Support department for processing * Prepare needed information by the Members Financial Counseling department including pulling statements, check copies, loan corrections, and account audits * Enhance members' self-esteem, cross-sell products and services that will help the member and provide additional financial counseling as needed * Keep all member and credit union business strictly confidential * Provide back-up as needed to the Member Service Department * Perform other duties as assigned * Ability to work evening and weekend hours as needed Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Knowledge of credit and collection techniques such as repossession and bankruptcy * Strong learning agility to obtain further in-depth knowledge of bankruptcies and procedures * Ability to contribute to a team effort by assisting fellow employees and co-workers * Excellent customer service and conversation skills * Basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills and attention to detail required required * Knowledge in appropriate software applications including Microsoft Word and Excel * Detailed-Oriented * Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment * Ability to effectively communicate, work and interact with others Education and Experience Requirements: * High School Diploma or equivalent * 3-5 years experience working in a collections environment preferred Physical Requirements * Work is typically sedentary * Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop/crouch/squat, use hands or fingers repetitively, reach at or below shoulder level and twist at waist * Must be able to exert up to 10 lbs of force, occasionally, to lift, carry, push, move and pull objects * The physical requirements noted are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
