Job Title: Planning Financial Analyst

Overview

This position will report to the Bakken Planning Manager. A successful candidate will have accounting and financial experience in order to understand the business and proactively provide support to the business unit. This position acts as an accounting liaison between Operations, Planning, and Accounting.

  • Primary function is performance analytics

  • Build financial acumen in the asset and integration with Accounting/Controllers

  • Primary contact with F&A organization and to bring Operational insight to these groups (Asset Accounting, Corp Accounting, Revenue Accounting, JV, A/P, SEC Reporting)

  • Understanding of forecast and key business drivers to bridge the gap between actuals and forecast for production, expense, and capital analysis

  • Strong understanding of operational forecast

  • Detailed direct, indirect, and capital expense analysis and contact for operations

Required Background

  • Possess a general understanding of the following accounting areas:

  • Production revenue

  • Fixed Assets capital accruals, unproved property, DD&A

  • Accounts Payable

  • Joint venture / COPAS

  • Direct Expense

  • Indirect Expense

  • Inventory M&S

  • Shipping & Handling / Marketing

  • Possess a strong understanding of financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow)

  • Understand the accounting close schedule and general understanding of SAP and ERP major processes (WBS settlement, work order process, cutback, etc.).

  • Possess experience with accounting policies, processes, systems, and reporting. Auditing experience a plus.

  • Possess ability to communicate difficult and possibly unpopular messages effectively and tactfully to asset/corporate management and others

  • Possess experience with IT, data, and process improvement a strong plus.

  • Mandatory: SAP, BW, Excel, Power Point

  • Optional (Nice to have): Spotfire, Enersight, WellView.

  • Education: Business preferable accounting or finance or 5 year experience in finance related field

Responsibilities

  • Provide monthly financial performance reporting to various levels of management within the Asset and Corporate. Including SCORE/MPR/BAO performance coordination/analysis/validation

  • Build custom reports to support the asset, planning, and legal.

  • Review financials throughout the close process to identify errors. Coordinate with Asset and Accounting to resolve.

  • Assist Asset with competitor analysis and reporting.

  • Provide budget tracking for capital commitments.

  • Oversight of time writing process.

  • Assist Accounting and Asset with establishing streamlined processes for Accounting and Accruals.

  • Arbitrate and mediate effectively between Asset, Planning, and Accounting.

  • Leading financial/accounting subject matter presentations and discussions with Asset and Planning leadership

  • Communicate & train regarding advanced accounting policies, guidelines, and processes to Asset and Planning to ensure understanding and compliance.

  • Provide Planning feedback on accounting methodologies and financial modeling.

  • Coordinate with Planning and Accounting to find solutions for correct and efficient accounting that are also efficient and achievable to model in Planning's tools.

  • Liaise with Internal and External auditors to ensure that they have the necessary information for audits.

  • Monitor and coordinate resolution of process issues impacting monthly asset reporting accuracy

Responsibilities include preparation of the Monthly Financial Report (MFR), Quarterly Expense Reports, and the Annual Financial Report (AFR) to UT System. Analysis of financial transactions in preparation of the monthly account reconciliations, and assisting with the interim and annual financial audit. Other functions include assisting with various internal and external requests for information, including but not limited to, surveys from the Department of Commerce and Texas Medical Center, financial data for charitable organization registration renewals, information related to the Uniform Statewide Accounting System (USAS) and the Higher Education Coordinating Board report. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES * Preparation and analysis of State Comptroller, UT System, and account reconciliation reports Assists with the preparation and distribution of the Quarterly Expense Reports, Monthly Financial Report (MFR), and Annual Financial Report (AFR) for The University of Texas System. Prepare Analysis of Financial Condition (AFC) annually. Process journal entries for transfers and eliminations of Pickens Investment, Notes Payable/Receivable, and Due To/From Related Party. Perform analysis to explain variances between current and prior year actual financial activity on the MFR. Investigate income statement and balance sheet variances in the AFR and provide explanations to UT System. Prepare monthly account reconciliations and resolve all reconciling items. Generate monthly encumbrance report for AFR reporting. * Preparation and review of audit related reports and charitable organization renewals Assists with the coordination of the annual external financial audit, including accumulation of prepared by client (PBC) information requested by the auditors, review of work papers and other information prior to submission to the auditors, and responding to follow up questions posed by the audit team. Communicates with management regarding potential issues and works with peers to address concerns as they arise. Provide data to Legal Office for charitable organization registration renewals as requested. * Surveys, ad hoc reporting, and other duties as assigned Assist with various surveys and requests for information from internal and external parties, including the Texas Medical Center, the State of Texas Comptroller's Office, and other related entities throughout the year. Perform other duties as assigned. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related business specialty. Two years business experience to include project management, data analysis or accounting.
