DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC San Diego Housing, Dining and Hospitality (HDH) provides housing and dining services for approximately 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students and their families in more than 400 buildings, covering nearly 10 million square feet. Consisting of eight divisions, HDH has more than 1,000 career employees, 1,200 to 1,300 student employees, and an annual operating budget greater than $250 million.

HDH is a self-supporting department that operates without any federal, state or campus funding. The department receives nearly 90% of its funding from housing and dining services.

It also secures revenue from conference and catering services. The goal is to break even.

HDH is in the midst of implementing an aggressive building plan that will added 10,000 new beds in the next 10 years and will almost double our square footage by 2032.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, Financial Strategic Planning and Systems, this position conducts planning and analysis for the HousingDiningHospitality Department, involving detailed impact analysis, developing financial projections, formulating courses of actions and delivering presentations to HDH Associate Directors. Provides primary coordination and analytical support to the Assistant Director and Associate Directors on various major projects in support of the department's new financial system.

This position also performs complex analysis related to budgeting and financial accounting, including forecasting, modeling, and policy administration. The incumbent performs analysis of the department's historical budgetary and financial data and develops strategies, recommends and implements resolutions to ensure efficient fiscal management of the department's resources using our new Financial System.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree from a 4-year university with a major in accounting, finance, economics, business administration, statistics, mathematics or an allied field, and two years of experience in fiscal analysis or financial operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated skill in applying advanced computer technology as a problem-solving tool in financial modeling, analysis, budgetary management, and other administrative functions and situations.

  • Advanced Microsoft Suite skills, specifically Excel. Demonstrated ability to accurately process large volumes of data using pivot tables and databases.

  • Working knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems. Knowledge and applications of principles and practices of fund accounting, cost analysis and audit procedures. Proven ability to analyze complex fiscal issues and information, recognize potential impact, identify alternative solutions and make recommendations.

  • Experience using spreadsheet and database software for moderately complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports. Ability to research, collect, process, validate, and interpret financial and budgetary data from diverse sources such as the budget and operating ledger systems and Department financial reports.

    Conceptual knowledge to develop, design, modify and prepare financial reports for use by management for decision-making. Ability to design, adapt, implement or evaluate new procedures, systems and reports.

  • Ability to gather reasonably retrievable information to organize, and perform basic financial analysis assignments. Working knowledge of accounting and finance principles for budget planning and reconciling data discrepancies. Strong math skills with the ability to perform complex calculations and to prepare, develop, and analyze expense reports and projections for consistency and accuracy.

  • Knowledge of not-for-profit financial reporting systems sufficient to comprehend Budget, Financial, Staffing and Payroll/Personnel and Student information systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing clearly and concisely. Ability to produce high quality written reports, and other documents, that effectively communicate in a clear, organized and concise manner to senior campus management and others.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills at all levels within the unit; excellent service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities. Ability to prioritize heavy workload, meet deadlines, cope with peak work-load periods and apply creativity and originality in problem solving.

  • Ability to function as a member of a team. Ability to successfully establish and maintain positive and goal-oriented working relationships.

  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources. Ability to perform detailed audits of budget, staffing and fund transfer data to ensure policy compliance and accuracy. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.

  • Proven ability to perform independently with minimal direction in unstructured situations and apply creativity and originality in problem solving. Ability to perform and produce quality work to meet HDH Associate Directors' expectations.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Overtime may be required.

  • Background check required.

  • If driving UC vehicle, must have current California Driver license, maintain good driving record and participate in the DMV pull program.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $61,800 - $108,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $29.60 - $51.72

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
