Clarkson College and the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships invite applicants to apply for the position of Financial Aid & Scholarships Counselor.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

1.Provide quality and professional customer service to prospective, continuing students, and parents regarding financial aid eligibility.

2.Analyze federal financial aid applications to determine a student's financial need.

3.Prepare and award financial aid packages, as well as perform all duties related to the financial aid process.

4.Utilize and update databases and process applications for financial aid received from students.

5.Collect and analyze financial data regarding students to determine aid eligibility and make awards within federal, donor and/or institutional guidelines.

6.Evaluate unusual/mitigating circumstance documentation or information provided by the student.

7.Exercise judgment by making adjustment or revisions to costs, contribution, or dependency status as exceptions to the prescribed process.

8.Assist in the preparation of and present information regarding federal financial aid, scholarships, employment, and grants for various campus groups to high school students and parents at meetings, group discussions, workshops and recruitment sessions.

9.Plans, organizes, and executes the loan programs. The loan programs include Federal Direct Loans, Parent Loan for Students (PLUS), Graduate PLUS loans, and alternative loans.



  1. Analyze various system generated reports such as grades and enrollment status or award status to verify continued compliance and eligibility of students receiving aid under federal and institutional guidelines.

  2. Notify students of changes in eligibility of awards and alternatives to amend the situation.


This position reports to the Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships. The Financial Aid & Scholarships Counselor works closely with Enrollment, Student Accounts, and the Registrar to ensure a positive and seamless experience for students.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in business, counseling, or communication or equivalent combination of education/experience combined required. (One year of education equals one year of experience.)

One year of financial aid experience in a school, college or university setting.

Minimum two years customer service experience required.

Knowledgeable in financial aid eligibility, application procedures, aid programs, costs, indebtedness, responsible money management and financial planning.

Strong customer service skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to adapt to customer and student needs.

Must not be in default on their Federal Student Loans. Default status would result in restricted status to their National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), which is necessary to fulfill the responsibilities and duties of this position.
