Job Summary:

The Financial Accounting Manager I is responsible for overseeing the accounting activities of a team of accountants, providing direct supervision and work leadership, and ensuring that the objectives of the team are met. The team will be focused on one of the subsets of financial accounting's overall areas of responsibility, e.g., Corporate, Unaccompanied Minors Shelters, Youth Justice/Community Based programs, Other Programs, Accounts Receivable, Reporting, Audit and Taxes, and other areas. The Financial Accounting Manager I will also serve as an internal subject matter expert in the area he or she is overseeing. The Financial Accounting Manager I will oversee other staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage, coach, and lead a team of accountants focused on a particular aspect of financial accounting (Corporate, UM, YJ/CB, other areas) including recruitment, hiring, training, delegation of duties, review, and termination.

  • Review work product of direct reports.

  • Recommend financial actions by analyzing accounting options.

  • Summarize current financial status by collecting information; preparing profit and loss statement and other reports, as needed.

  • Substantiate financial transactions by reviewing and auditing documents.

  • Produce accurate accounting reports and present their results to internal management at all levels and to external stakeholders.

  • Analyze financial information and summarize and communicate financial status for a variety of internal and external stakeholders including, but not limited to, board of directors, senior management, auditors, regulatory agencies, grantors, banks, accounting staff and program staff.

  • Oversee the budget process for area of responsibility, as applicable.

  • Support month-end and year-end close process and serve as liaison with the outside auditors as it relates to the focus and function of the team being supervised.

  • Communicate with direct supervisor on work status and issues that arise.

  • Ensure that accounting and bookkeeping practices adhere to federal, state, and local regulations and laws.

  • Actively work to improve any processes when possible to increase accuracy, consistency and efficiency.

  • Provide technical support and advice.

  • Participate in the process of setting accounting policies and procedures.

  • Provide input into department's goal setting process and implement established goals in area of responsibility.

Other Functions:

  • May travel to various program locations to assist in monitoring and assisting programs with finance and accounting matters.

  • Compile reports from various database systems (e.g., Jet Reports, Smart View, etc.).

  • Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Required:

  • Hold a valid Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in the State of Texas with a status of Issued (license is current); or a valid CPA license from another state that is transferable for a Texas license.

  • At least five (5+) years of relevant job experience performing non-routine accounting tasks.

  • Excellent math skills; ability to analyze figures; aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills.

  • Excellent communication skills (written & verbal).

  • Excellent interpersonal and staff management skills.

  • Advanced understanding of accounting, regulatory and reporting standards as it relates to the specific focus of the team being supervised.

  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Familiar with 2 CFR 200.

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office software, with an emphasis on Excel.

  • Excellent knowledge of reporting tools related to an ERP system.

  • Must be organized, thorough, reliable and consistent.

  • Ability to work independently of direct supervisor, and direct the efforts of a team.

  • Ability to prioritize work appropriately in a fast-paced business environment to meet multiple deadlines.

  • Ability to handle ambiguity and work with limited information and with significant time constraints.

  • Ability to display patience and helpfulness, while handling sensitive and confidential information and situations.

  • Accuracy and attention to detail.

Preferred

  • Previous staff management/supervisory experience preferred

Physical Demands:

Must be able to read, write, and communicate both verbally and in written form to express and exchange ideas. While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee must be able to access all components of work station and other office equipment. Frequent typing, writing, bending and twisting. Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds.

Work Environment:

General office environment with moderate noise. This position is mostly sedentary, involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. A busy environment with many unscheduled interruptions. Frequent computer use at workstation for extended periods of time. Public contact position requiring appropriate business apparel.
