Job Description

The New York Times is looking for an experienced editor and manager to lead our finance team, running coverage of the markets, companies and people that shape our financial lives.

The scope of finance coverage at The Times is wide. It includes news and features about Wall Street banks, giant investment funds, white collar crime, consumer finance and the stock market. It also includes coverage of the social and political impact of billionaire investors who are looking to use their financial resources to shape our world.

The subject matter is often complicated, and an important part of the job is translating complex financial or legal concepts into language that is accessible to a broad readership.

You will have a passion for financial news and be comfortable handling story edits in multiple formats, from breaking news and short items to longer-form features. A collaborative, enthusiastic team spirit is essential, as is the desire to bring scrutiny to a powerful industry. You will need to spot important and urgent news of the day and also be able to shape coverage of the biggest issues in an industry.

We're looking for someone with thoughtful editorial judgment who can work with reporters who have a wide range of experience on the beat - serving as a coach, manager and guide in a constantly changing news environment.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and direct news coverage of the financial industry, investing, and important players on Wall Street.

  • Manage reporting projects, and serving as a first editor for long-form stories.

  • Manage a team of reporters to produce news and enterprise.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Deep knowledge of financial topics, and a proven ability to relate these to a broad readership.

  • 10+ years of experience as a reporter and editor.

  • Digital-media experience.

  • Experience in large newsrooms writing or editing breaking news and longer investigative features.

  • At least 5 years of writing about or editing coverage of a specific industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A willingness to collaborate, and the ability to partner with colleagues across the Business section and the rest of The New York Times newsroom.

  • A dedication to The Times and its journalistic mission.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $170,000.00 and $200,000.00.
