The Massachusetts State Reclamation and Mosquito Control Board (SRB),within the Department of Agricultural Resources, oversees mosquito control in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts including 12 regional programs. SRB establishes administrative and technical policies, guidelines, and best management practices to ensure mosquito control programs are safe and effective.
The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources' (MDAR) mission is to help keep the Massachusetts' food supply safe and secure, and to work to keep Massachusetts agriculture economically and environmentally sound.
The Bristol County Mosquito Control Project (BCMCP) serves the 20 cities and towns within Bristol County, Massachusetts. The mission of the BCMCP is to reduce mosquito populations through surveillance, water management, biological and chemical controls. All of these methods are performed in an environmentally sensitive manner to minimize potential effects on people, wildlife and the environment. The BCMCP is currently seeking applicants to fill a year-round field technician position. The field technician is assigned to the BCMCP Headquarters in Attleboro, MA.
The primary function of a Field Technician I is to work in all phases of mosquito control field operations, including but not limited to water management, larviciding, adulticiding, collection of field data and miscellaneous duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Hold and maintain a CORE Pesticide applicators license
Understand the basic elements of mosquito control, recognize, and identify mosquitoes in all life stages: egg-larvae-pupae-adult.
Operate all Project vehicles carefully and safely in compliance with all state laws regulations and Project policies.
Use proper procedures, application rates, mixing rates and droplet size to apply pesticides.
Apply pesticides in assigned districts in strict accordance with label directions and state and federal regulations.
Accurately collect and record all data that may be required and submit a daily pesticide report.
To know the exact location of all pesticide exclusions within your area and to honor their requests per 333CMR 13.03 and/or all other applicable policies, regulations & laws.
Learn the location of mosquito nuisance sources and areas of excessive infestations in the district.
Know the streets and topographical variations in the district with ability to read a map and plan efficient spray routes to navigate throughout Bristol County.
Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of hand and power tools used to construct, clean and maintain water management systems. Experience with chain and brush saws a plus.
Perform simple repairs and adjustments to machinery in your care.
Ability to understand drainage systems and identify problem areas with the potential to become breeding sites.
Demonstrate punctuality, dependability and be compliant with work schedules. To work independently and as a team player. Must have the physical ability to perform manual labor such as ditch maintenance work in outdoor environments and in inclement weather and must be willing to perform all assigned tasks including facility maintenance.
While at work, answer inquiries from townspeople to the extent covered under your license category. Defer all others to the Project office.
Take every opportunity to increase your mosquito knowledge by learning the printed information supplied to you on pesticides and methods of application.
To question any instructions that is not fully understood.
Report any potential or active safety issues and be knowledgeable in emergency response steps.
To conduct oneself in a professional manner.
Any other related duties as directed by the Superintendent.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be at least 18 years of age.
Applicant shall be in possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license. Applicants must have a clean driving record and be willing to furnish a printed copy upon request.
Applicant must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds for extended periods of time over rough terrain.
Applicant must be able to speak, read and understand the English language.
Ability to read and understand maps and their layout is required.
Must be punctual and adhere to all to work instructions
Preference may be given to current holders of Category 47 (Mosquito and biting fly).
