We are seeking a Field Service Representative who will be required to perform both in shop and field service work. Plans and coordinates activities concerned with installing equipment, investigating and resolving customer reports of technical problems with equipment, and eliminating future operational or service difficulties by performing the following duties.


  • Travel to customer sites to install, repair, and perform preventative maintenance to customer's equipment to include flooded and sealed batteries, chargers and DC power distribution equipment (cable trays, battery racks and power cables).

  • Follows all company policies and procedures as listed, but not limited to: warranty, safety, environmental, OSHA, DOT Hazmat, and ISO9000.

  • Interacts with all levels of people, both inside and outside the company.

  • Develops and conducts training on the safe operations of the equipment and demonstrates skills to trainees, including both team members and customers.

  • Performs Preventative Maintenance inspections of customers batteries, chargers, battery handling equipment, and battery changing/charging area and records data.

  • Replaces defective parts, reassembles battery, and fuses lead parts with gas torch.

  • Determines specific gravity of solution.

  • Waters, Washes, cleans, and neutralizes customer's batteries at customer's location.

  • Installs equipment at customer's facility to ensure full functionality according to specifications.

  • Provides on-site technical assistance to help troubleshoot and repair equipment.

  • Maintains records of performance reports.

  • Provides a communication link between the customer and the company to help ensure that effective service is provided to the customer.

  • Occassionally download battery and charger data via a monitoring device and use the information to repair or correct battery/charger problems in accordinace with the customer's operation.

  • Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent; or industry related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and the Internet.

  • Able to operate a cell phone.

  • Basic mechanical aptitude.

  • Previous experience working with hand and power tools.

  • Previous customer service experience in field support.

  • Able to read with comprehension and write documents (such as customer correspondences, memos and reports) in English.

  • Able to perform basic math such as add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Able to solve simple equations.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours and respond to after hour service calls when required.

Driving Requirements

  • Able and willing to travel to customer sites.

  • Must have a valid driver's license and a safe driving record with minimal traffic violations.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age to drive a company vehicle.

  • Able and willing to operate a forklift.

  • Able and willing to travel up to 75% of the time.

  • Able and willing to do overnight travel when required.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time and frequently bend, twist, reach, stoop, kneel or crouch.

  • Must have hand dexterity to manipulate and handle materials.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily continuous basis. Any lifting over 50 pounds will be done with the assistance of a mechanical device or with the assistance of another employee.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A basic electrical understanding.

  • The use of test equipment and reading schematics.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to fumes, airborne particles and toxic chemicals including lead products and fiberglass products. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock, outside weather conditions, extreme cold and extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the environment is moderate and occasionally may be loud. Employees working in this position are tested periodically throughout the year for the level of lead in their blood.

The Technician will be responsible for establishing and maintaining an exceptional brand relationship with our customers by acting as a trusted adviser and resource during all on-site and remote support activities. The Field Service Technician must be passionate about providing legendary customer service and compliance with all established Environmental, Safety & Health policies and procedures. Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities: * Service skills and repair situation management * Responsible to complete all tasks from installation, startup, functional & performance testing, training, project closeout, warranty transition, service, and aftermarket contracts. Capability of handling PLC software modification a plus * Responsible to identify service requirements and manage site resources to complete the activities on time. On site management of other suppliers or Xylem resources as needed. * Conducts TotalCare equipment condition audits to establish service opportunities and potential actions to lessen Customer equipment downtime * Works with Customer's representatives to understand equipment issues, troubleshoot and diagnose root-cause problems, and arranges necessary parts and service to resolve issues. Timeliness, commitment to customer, and a driving sense of urgency is a requirement * Collaborate and manage customer communications (requests, complaints, observations, etc.) with the appropriate Xylem internal teams to bring timely resolution to Customer issues. * Review specifications, design and scope of supply of the assigned projects in order to have a clear and detailed understanding of the requirements to help streamline onsite service completion. * Customer Management and Communication Skills * Actively explore and identify unmet customer needs and provide opportunity for innovative solutions. Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification: * 3 to 5 years' experience with Ultraviolet Disinfection (UV) and Ozone oxidation process equipment in the municipal or industrial, water or wastewater fields is a plus. * Ability to read and understand Process and Instrumentation Drawings (P & ID diagrams), Examples: hydraulic profile diagrams, gas and liquid piping or open channel, gas diffusion in liquid (porous diffusers, side stream gas injector), mechanical level control (weir), pump, valves, support and skids, etc * Training and repair service experience in instrumentation (flow meters, level transmitters, temperature transmitters, pressure transmitters, Dew-point analyzer, etc.). * Experience with electrical equipment for low & medium voltage power distribution panel, conduit and cable trays, grounding and three phase network configuration, harmonics and distortion, IEEE & NEC * Experience in controls & networks for PLC and HMI for online debugging, network troubleshooting, SCADA interface, I/O hardware and software configuration and testing, cross referencing search and code debugging. * General knowledge on UL and CSA. * Is able to conduct training sessions and presentations in front of groups of Customer operators, technicians, and maintenance staff. * Requires excellent communication skills, verbal and written. * >75% travel required within the US and Canada.
