Wagner Equipment Co., the Caterpillar dealer for Colorado, New Mexico and far west Texas, is seeking applications for a Field Service Diesel Mechanics for the Climax Mine in Leadville, CO.

The Field Service technician works with some direct supervision in diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing heavy equipment at the customer's site.



  • Maintains truck and crane inspection logs on a daily basis

  • Completes CAT service reports daily that are legible, have proper grammar and sentence structure, and appropriate SIMS code

  • Transmits photos, timecards, service reports, and other information through e-mail

  • Maintains good customer records on jobs that have been assigned

  • Maintains credit card receipts for accounting purposes


  • Works with the Service Department, Product Support Representatives, and Sales Department to meet all of the customer's needs


  • Communicates with customers on the diagnosis and status of repairs, parts, and other concerns

  • Teaches and coaches other technicians in the field


  • Promotes Wagner Equipment Co. to customers


  • Accurately troubleshoots and repairs CAT equipment the first time

  • Reads, understands, and applies electrical and hydraulic schematics to repair work

  • Safely rigs or hooks components for lifting

  • Removes, repairs, and installs major components in varying configurations of equipment

  • Maintains tooling in good working order as per MSHA and OSHA regulations

  • Makes determinations in the field on warranty repair and guidelines, communicating decisions to customer and dispatcher

  • Maintains service vehicle in safe and good repair


Minimum Education Required: High School Diploma or GED and Relevant CAT accredited courses

Minimum Experience Required: Three + years' experience servicing heavy equipment

Administrative / Clerical Experience

  • Basic Level

Customer Service Experience

  • Intermediate Level

Sales Experience

  • Intermediate Level

Technical or Mechanical

  • Advanced Level

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations Required: DOT Health Card, Class D Driver's License and MSHA license

This is a rural, alpine area approximately two hours from the Denver metropolitan area. The mine is at an altitude of approximately 10,200 feet. In the winter, the average high temperature is 31 degrees and the average low is 3 degrees. In the summer, the average high temperature is 71 degrees and the average low is 38 degrees. The average snowfall in Lake/Chafee counties is in excess of 200 inches per year. Performs duties related to the operation of heavy equipment in support of production including de-watering, materials delivery, maintaining berms, and surface maintenance at a highly skilled level. * Operates heavy equipment which may include but is not limited to: haul trucks, water trucks, rubber tire dozers, track dozers, excavators, motor graders and front-end loaders * May assist with training and mentoring of other equipment operators * Responsible for understanding changes to assigned work areas and any potential hazards * Responsible for knowing the following procedures: start-up and shut-down, parking, mounting and dismounting, Lock-Out Tag-Out Try-Out (LOTOTO), emergency, fire, working with ground personnel, and Blue Stake * Performs one or more of the following duties: finish grading, slope grading, road building, managing stockpiles, road surface maintenance, building and maintaining road berms, loading trucks, and trenching * Responsible for understanding equipment components and practices that reduce component damage and wear * May be asked to assist with project work that may include: establishing ramps, establishing pioneer work in non-active mining locations, establishing and maintaining reclamation tailings slopes, and establishing and maintaining reclamation stockpile slopes * May perform operations support activities such as barricading shovels and assisting with power cable moves * Communicates through computer dispatching system or two-way radio * Performs pre-shift inspection of equipment * May perform minor maintenance activities * Perform other duties as required Minimum Qualifications * Two (2) years of mobile equipment operating experience Qualifications Preferred * High School diploma or GED Criteria/Conditions * Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English * Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards * Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment * This is a Safety sensitive role * Personal protective equipment is required on a regular basis, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and, as needed: respirator, rubber steel-toed boots, gloves, fall protection, protective clothing, goggles, face shield and other protective equipment as required * Employee may be required to work in environments that may include exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, dust, noise, fumes, and gasses * While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on uneven work surfaces and work on elevated platforms * Frequently may be required to lift up to fifty (50) pounds during the course of the work day * May be required to work a non-standard schedule which may include shift work (other than day shift) in a 24/7/365 operation * Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/ alcohol-free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing as allowed by State laws Freeport-McMoRan has reviewed the jobs at its various office and operating sites and determined that many of these jobs require employees to perform essential job functions that pose a direct threat to the safety or health of the employees performing these tasks or others.
