BD Diagnostic is seeking a Field Service Engineer for the Lab Automation platform. This position is responsible for providing on-site support to BD customers, including, but not limited to, installation, corrective maintenance, preventative maintenance, removals, and other support as needed. This support will be provided during normal business hours, as well as on-call hours outside of normal working hours. Additionally, this position may be asked to provide phone support during normal business hours and after-hours, including on holidays and weekends. Support of marketing shows, exhibitions, and clinical trials may be required as well. Engineers are expected to be committed to ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) standards.

Job Description


  • Install and service complex diagnostic laboratory instrumentation, with minimum direct supervision, in response to scheduled and emergency customer requests, via dispatch by the Technical Service Center, in accordance with current ISO and GMP standards.

  • Flexibility to travel up to 50% of time outside of home geographic area, based upon business needs.

  • Complete all service documentation as required by the position function, or as requested by other business functions, in accordance with current GMP requirements.

  • Report and document all customer complaints in appropriate systems of record for resolution and investigation.

  • Provide follow-up to customers who have recently been provided service, to verify instrument functionality and customer satisfaction.

  • Properly maintain trunk stock inventory within limits established by Recommended Spare Parts List.

  • Maintain all assigned calibrated test equipment and tools in good working condition and calibration dates.

  • Demonstrate good judgment in utilization of company credit card, while adhering to expense levels within the established business guidelines.

  • Maintain and utilize company vehicle as prescribed by fleet vehicle contractor requirements, including vehicle service maintenance, cleanliness, and organization at all times.

  • Complete all administrative requirements of the position within expected timeframes.

  • Provide on-call support per published schedules, or on short-notice, as required in support of business needs.

  • Support an inclusive and diverse work environment.



  • High School Diploma/GED.

  • Two years of Field Service experience in the troubleshooting and repair of complex IT, electronic, and mechanical systems.

  • Strong working knowledge of electronics, electro-mechanical devices, (Megatronics), PLCs, and pneumatics

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Outstanding customer service and soft skills

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state-issued driver's license and meet BD's auto safety standards

  • Must be able to be flexible to meet customers Service Level Agreement

  • Must be available for work on call as needed.


  • Associate's Degree in Electronics/Computers/Biomedical Engineering or Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET)

  • Expertise in Robotics

  • 4+ years of biomedical experience: installation, maintenance, troubleshooting diagnostic equipment

  • Technical writing experience

  • Training experience

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills and ablity to function with little supervision.

  • Knowledge of PC/software/LIS/networking/database management knowledge is highly desired.

  • Experience with PC assembly, upgrades and repairs are highly desirable.

As a Field Service Engineer (FSE) you will be the face of Beckman Coulter to customers and support them, directly impacting patient health and overall well-being. In this role, you will utilize critical thinking to resolve issues within defined procedures and practices to resolve appropriate action to rapidly repair instrumentation. Many FSEs operate independently within their geographic territory, however we operate as a team to share standard methodologies, mentor and receive experienced technical support. In this role, you will enjoy being home-based and will also be provided with a company car, iphone and laptop. You will also have the opportunity to travel within the region to support customers using your technical expertise. Position Summary: The Field Service Engineer in this position will: * Under minimal supervision, serve as lead to assigned customers; complete troubleshooting, installation, validation, maintenance, and service repair needs on designated equipment. May assist and/or train newer Field Engineers * Provide excellent and efficient service to Beckman Coulter's customers, along with technical training on products * Repair, maintain, and install product line(s). * Complete on-time and accurate Preventative Maintenance and Field Modification Instruction as needed * Travel throughout the district territory, experiencing all the various places our instrumentation is utilized * Document and report all repairs and product failures * Keep up to date on administrative responsibilities such as maintaining customer service logs and internal service records in a timely manner, ordering repair parts, and adhering to cycle times * Help with the development of preventative maintenance procedures * Focus on customer needs and satisfaction, while building on and enhancing the relationship with the customer to ultimately become a perceived partner in their business * Applicant will require ability to lift up to 50 pounds. This would be to include tools, replacement parts, consumables etc. * Maintain a Valid driver's license that meets Beckman Coulter's safe driver standards * Beckman Coulter Associates who drive Beckman Coulter vehicles must comply with the Danaher Company Vehicle Policy. * Vendor credentialing requirements include without limitation, yearly background checks, immunizations, and various trainings. * Comply with vendor credentialing requirements is an essential function of this position. * Effective communication and customer service skills. * Instill customer satisfaction that is recognizable and valuable to the customer * Stay compliant with the company's standard background check, including a post-offer drug test. * Strong time management and organization skills. Required: * Associates degree plus 1-3 years experience * Technical Associates degree or equivalent in military experience * Hold a current valid driver's license and good driving record over last three years is required * Willing to work different shifts as business needs * Ability to travel and provide service in assigned geography, as well as periodic travel to other regions or for training Preferred: * Bachelor's degree. * 3 + years' experience diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electromechanical, and/or electronic equipment. * Experience collaborating with internal team members and external customers.
