Performs consultation with customers and manages installation projects involving customer service, training, the installation, modification and repair of complex equipment and computerized systems with a broad scope of responsibility. Assigned projects are diverse in problem solving, requiring judgment in selecting best correctional method.


  • Consults with customers on equipment, may conducts site surveys, complete drawing and measurements to release a design with regards to equipment needs and location of equipment. Must use independent judgment.

  • Conducts on-site installation of equipment and follows established testing procedures to ensure proper working order.

  • Analyzes and isolates equipment start-up malfunctions and takes corrective action.

  • May initiate interim repairs until parts / equipment arrive on site.

  • Trains customer personnel on equipment operation and maintenance responsibilities.

  • Represents company in dealing with customer and is responsible for customer's satisfaction with equipment.

  • Makes technical presentations and has a strong knowledge of company products.

  • May provide work leadership and train other employees.

  • Uses professional concepts and company policies and procedures to solve a wide range of difficult problems in imaginative and practical ways.

  • Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.

  • Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

  • Normally receives no instruction on routine work and general instruction on new assignments.

  • Provides crisp and timely written communication in conjunction with the full execution of all required written reports

  • Regular and punctual attendance.

  • Requires extensive domestic travel and occasional international travel, by automobile and/or airplane, up to 48 weeks/year.

  • Will drive vehicle as little as 40% of the time as well as travel via commercial airline, dependent upon the home base location of the Engineer and the customer location.

  • Requires the ability to regularly lift seventy (70) plus pounds and the ability to maneuver over, under and around printing equipment.

  • Prepares daily logs and reports of work performed.

  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.


  • Must have High School Diploma or GED. Bachelor of Science degree preferred, with emphasis in Electrical or computer Engineering.

  • Preferred 5 years experience working as a customer support engineer for multi disciplinary products.

  • Must be proficient with computers and desktop applications.

Utilizing computers, software, hand tools, test equipment, wiring diagrams and manufacturer's specifications in a timely, accurate manner. Essential Functions: * Travel 60-70% to job sites, both in the U.S. and internationally. * Install, diagnose, service and repair PLCs, mechanical or electrical equipment associated with Shick systems. * Examine electrical and mechanical equipment during operating cycles to detect excess vibration, overheating, electrical shorts, fluid leaks, and loose, noisy or non-functioning parts. * Replace worn or defective parts such as switches, pumps, motors, bearings, transmissions, belts, gears, control boards, elements and defective wiring. * Provide research for part prices/availability, manufacturer's specifications, warranty status, estimate approval or other related items for customers as required. * Order additional or replacement parts for missing or faulty items; return faulty items for warranty evaluation. * Calibrate meters, set timers, etc. and adjust as required during service or startup as indicated in manufacturer's manuals etc. * Apply knowledge and ability to use hand tools and operate test equipment such as test meters, ammeters, voltmeters or ohmmeters. * Read and understand wiring diagrams to trace electrical circuits and ensure proper operation according to manufacturer's specifications. * Interact with customers and co-workers in a professional manner. * Determine and explain nature of repairs to customers in a clear manner to avoid miscommunication, and review service time sheets with customers for signature approval. * Document service activities via daily work reports in a manner that effectively communicates work time, activity, and status to Supervisor, Project Manager, and/or customer. * Maintain appropriate communication with the office or Project Team to ensure efficient and timely Start-up or service. * Return customer units to original state and clean up work area daily and prior to leaving each job. * Attend and participate in customer start-up and technical meetings as required. * Assist with planning as required; then execute project startup against plan and on budget. * Substantial field work and travel (60-70%) will be required. Occasional international travel. * Perform other related duties as assigned. Requirements Expectations: Within the first year of employment the Automation Field Technician must understand the Basics of Shick Controls Engineering of dry and liquid ingredient handling systems, including creating ladder logic code, graphical interface operation and ability to make edits. Testing and editing of batch and recipe management systems, PID loop tuning, and panel wiring verification. (Proficient by 24 months) * Able to travel 60-70%, including international travel. * High School Diploma or equivalent required. Prefer higher level education in electronics, programming, etc. * Minimum of three to five years' experience in installation, industrial maintenance, and troubleshooting of processing systems required. Prefer knowledge of pneumatic conveying systems and basic fluid handling knowledge. * Ability to review and understanding mechanical and electrical drawing packages. * Ability to perform trouble shooting of mechanical, controls, and instruments at fabrication shop or at customer site locations. * Understanding of the concepts of PLC program development, Panelview (HMI development), DeviceNet, Ethernet, ControlNet and batch controls. * General knowledge of NEC, BISSC, 3A, OSHA. * Ability to manage/lead in situations with customers, team members, and contractors with composure. * Strong written and oral communication, customer service and professionalism. * Must be organized, have strong time management skills and a strong work ethic. * Computer knowledge: Microsoft Office, Excel and Word. Database experience a plus, but not required. * Able to climb, bend, kneel.
