PART-TIME AT- WILL POSITION
NO BENEFITS
LIMITED TO 1,000 HOURS PER FISCAL YEAR (AVERAGE 20 HOURS PER WEEK)
Under direct supervision, performs a variety of maintenance duties including streets, sewer, asphalt or parks maintenance; operates a variety of hand power tools and equipment; removal of illegal signs; retrieval of shopping carts; assistance with community clean ups and general City events; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.
Essential Duties and Responsiblities
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Monitor daily work assignments of Work Release Program.
Perform weed abatement, trash and debris clean up.
Be able to operate machinery to perform maintenance duties.
Must have good communication and interpersonal skills, be able to observe safe work methods and use safety equipment, and have knowledge of customer service techniques.
Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
When Assigned to Public Works
Assists in a variety of duties in the repair and maintenance of city streets, sidewalks, easements and related facilities.
Clean debris from storm drains, catch basins, sewers, streets, parking lots and walkways.
Remove weeds, grass and debris; use power trimmers, cut and remove roots.
Participates in graffiti removal efforts as assigned; operates sandblaster as needed.
When Assigned to Code Enforcement
Assists in removing illegal signs and retrieving shopping carts.
Assists with community clean ups and general City events.
Minimum Qualifications
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINESAny combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. One year of experience working in related field is desirable. Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Knowledge of:
Basic maintenance materials, methods and terminology.
Basic methods and techniques of street maintenance.
Basic methods and techniques of maintenance and equipment operation.
Operational characteristics of various maintenance equipment and tools.
Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.
Operation and maintenance requirements of power-driven equipment.
Ability to:
Learn methods, equipment and materials used in street maintenance.
Operate a variety of maintenance tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Clean, maintain and repair assigned tools and equipment.
Perform manual labor.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Interpret and explain City policies and procedures.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Selection Process:
Candidates must clearly demonstrate through their application material that they meet the employment standards outlined above. All properly completed applications will be reviewed, and the most appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in the selection process. Examinations for the positions may consist of any combination of written, performance, and oral exams to evaluate the applicant's skills, training, and experience for the position. Successful applicants will be placed on an eligibility list. The City may also merge lists. The selected candidate(s) must successfully complete pre-employment clearances which may include a physical, drug screen, and fingerprinting.
Veterans Preference Credit Eligibility:
Veterans of the armed forces, who have been discharged or released from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable (Government Code: 18540.4), shall receive an additional five (5) points to their final examination score for ranking purposes only. This preference will apply only to the first appointment to any regular full-time City appointment. A copy of your valid DD214 must be submitted on or before the final filing date in order to be eligible for Veterans Preference Credit.
