The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Field Operations Supervisor (Transportation Engineer 4) to play a crucial role in advancing our mission of providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation solutions. As a technical program specialist, this position holds key responsibilities in highway design, construction, and right-of-way (ROW) management. By overseeing survey crews and preparing essential survey records/documents, the role contributes significantly to the organization's mission. What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Field Operations Supervisor will:

  • Offer specialized support for field and office-based survey operations for the Northwest Region.

  • Prepare Records of Surveys and Permits to Remove or Destroy Survey Monuments.

  • Compile and organize survey records, including HQ Preliminary Hydraulic Design (PHD) requests and various specialized surveys.

  • Oversee Unmanned Aerial Survey (UAS) flights and process associated information for survey purposes.

  • Plan and execute surveys for office locations, ensuring accuracy and adherence to standards.

  • Liaise with the office operations group and request offices to ensure seamless field operations.

  • Assess survey requests, determine the scope of work, and plan accordingly.

  • Personally assess project sites, developing schedules, estimates, and workforce projections.

  • Navigate challenging terrain, transporting up to 40 pounds of equipment during fieldwork.

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive schedule encompassing all current and future survey work.

  • Plan, assign, and review the work of staff, ensuring adequate staffing levels, evaluating performance, and addressing training needs.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • A Washington State Land Surveyor In-Training (LSIT) Certificate. (or equivalent certification from another state)

  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 3 or equivalent.

  • Four (4) years of demonstrated land surveying experience.

  • Advanced knowledge of surveying and engineering principles.

  • Ability to work safely in hazardous conditions, such as navigating uneven terrain while carrying up to 40 pounds of equipment and being exposed to weather, traffic, insect bites and stings, and construction activities. The work may also take place in inclement weather.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, such as weekends, nights, or split shifts.

  • Valid Driver's License.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:

  • A Washington State Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) License.

  • Working knowledge of budget preparation and expense control, employee work schedule tracking and control, purchasing policies, contractor consultant services, project planning and management, project tracking and control, and interagency and vendor agreements.

  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff, with mentoring, coaching, and team-building skills.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.

  • The salary range listed includes the legislatively approved general wage increase of 3%, effective July 1, 2024.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
