This position will report to the Quality Assurance Director, UTLX Field Services, with a dotted line to the Director of Operations, UTLX Mini-Shops, and Technical Service's Manager of NDT Processes. The Mechanical Integrity Specialist will be responsible for performing advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections on freight and tank car equipment in accordance with approved procedures using approved equipment and methods, as well as supervising employees performing the basic NDT inspections performed at the shop. The results of these inspections will be accurately communicated through reporting and direct communication with the Director of Operations, UTLX Mini-Shops, Quality Assurance Director, UTLX Field Service, and Technical Service's Manager of NDT Processes as required. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively both verbal and written and can achieve certification in various NDT and Special Processes to support car repair activities across various UTLX Mini-Shop locations.

ESENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervises and audits NDT work being performed by hourly employees within UTLX Mini-Shops.

  • Provides technical guidance, hands-on training and mentoring of other NDT staff.

  • Performs advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections on freight and tank car equipment.

  • Ensures all inspections are performed in a manner that ensures released product meets all regulatory, company, car owner, and customer requirements.

  • Ensures the required and most effective NDT methods and techniques are utilized and performed in accordance with established procedures and programs.

  • Responsible for ensuring NDT equipment is calibrated, properly stored and maintained, and operational.

  • Travels to and from various Mini-Shop locations daily to complete NDT inspections as needed, while working closely with the Director of Operations, UTLX Mini-Shops to ensure repair schedules are maintained.

  • Ensures all required documentation is accurate and completed in a timely manner.

  • Strives to maintain proficiency by updating technical knowledge of NDT and other Special Processes.

  • Properly applies the various procedures, techniques, and acceptance criteria required to inspect and qualify freight and tank cars and their components.

  • Compliance with company safety program and requirements.

  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This role does not carry direct supervisory responsibilities.

  • Able to effectively self-manage assigned tasks to ensure all work is done in a timely manner.

  • Able to communicate technical information verbally and in writing as well as accurately and legibly complete documents and reports.

  • Able to effectively use electronic systems (including assets on UTLX mobile, tablet and PC platforms).

  • Must be able to work in permit-required confined spaces and enter tank car tanks through manway openings of 18" to 20" in diameter and work within confined space safety requirements.

  • Must be able to work at heights with appropriate fall-protection equipment.

  • Must be able to maintain clear driving record, valid driver's license, and safely operate at least a full-size ½ ton truck on public roadways, and inside customer facilities.

  • Must be able to pass DISA drug test.

  • Must be able to comply with customer specific site access requirements and always ensure adherence to their applicable procedures.

The Mechanical Integrity Specialist works to always meet internal and external customer expectations by fully applying oneself to the task involved, preventing errors, and developing and implementing personal quality improvement projects. In addition, the Mechanical Integrity Specialist is required to understand the Responsible Care Management System and actively participate in activities outlined therein.

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Technical / post-secondary education a plus.

  • Minimum of 3 years of related NDT work experience in railcar repair or manufacturing.

  • Previous certification to the requirements of one of the following recognized programs; American Association of Railroads MSRP C-III, Appendix T, American Society of Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT)-SNT-TC1A, or ACCP, American National Standards Institute (ANSI/ASNT) CP-189, or International Standards Organization (ISO) 9712 in the following methods: Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Leak Testing (LT), and Visual Testing (VT) is required.

  • Previous certification and documented experience using Penetrant Testing (PT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), and specialized NDT method techniques including Phased-array UT (PAUT), Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD), Full Matrix Capture (TFM/FMC), and Alternating Current Field Management (ACFM) is a plus.

  • Experience with robotics in NDT data collection activities a plus.

  • Knowledge of air brakes, tank car service equipment, welding, coatings, and other special processes a plus.

  • Ability to review and perform initial interpretation of inspection data using various equipment-specific platforms.

  • Ability to interpret and apply codes, standards and specifications as required for the correct performance of NDT.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Physical Demands: The position involves frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting heavy objects. Employees may be required and must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and operate machinery or equipment for extended periods.

  • Environmental Exposure: The work environment may include exposure to loud noises, moving machinery, and hazardous materials. Employees must adhere to safety protocols and always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Temperature Variations: The job requires work to be performed outdoors, which may require working in environments with temperature fluctuations, including hot, cold, or humid conditions. Proper attire and precautionary measures are necessary to ensure comfort and safety.

  • Shift Work: The position may involve working rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Flexibility in scheduling and availability to work overtime may be required to meet production demands.

  • Physical Stamina: Employees should have the physical stamina and endurance to perform tasks that require prolonged periods of physical exertion and repetitive motion. Regular breaks and ergonomic considerations are provided to mitigate fatigue and prevent injuries.

  • Safety Precautions: Adherence to safety guidelines and protocols is paramount in our industrial environment. Employees are expected to actively participate in safety training programs, report any safety hazards or incidents promptly, and contribute to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace for themselves and their colleagues.

  • Travel: Ability to travel locally via company vehicle 100% of the time to company sites.
