Summary
Under direct supervision, in the assigned division of the Parks and Grounds Section or Public Works, is responsible for performing road maintenance; assists in the construction of roads; directs traffic on road construction sites; performs general park maintenance; repairs and maintains park equipment and gardening tools; and performs other related duties as required.
Multiple positions at these work locations:
Duties and Responsibilities
Performs manual labor at construction sites
Assists maintenance crew in the construction of roads
Performs repair patching of roadways and concrete
Performs flagging of vehicles to direct traffic on road construction sites for public safety
Picks up and disposes of trash, brush and dead animals
Cleans picnic areas, park restrooms, buildings and kitchen area
Mows and trims lawn, shrubbery and trees and repairs and maintains gardening equipment and tools
Paints buildings, picnic tables, playground and recreational equipment
Performs concrete and masonry, minor plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs
May perform other maintenance duties as assigned
May supervise community restitution workers
Repairs, removes or replaces worn out or damages park equipment
Performs other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and one (1) year experience in lawns, grounds and maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge of various gardening, trimming and cutting equipment; knowledge of basic equipment and repairs; knowledge of safety standards and practices
Skill in the operation of hand and power tools; skill in operating various hand and electric tools and gas-operated gardening and landscaping equipment
Ability to perform routine, repetitive work; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to work in any park as assigned; ability to establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with co-workers, other County maintenance personnel and the general public
Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license
Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
Must be able and willing to attend training at department's discretion
May be assigned to any or various county facilities
Required to be on call 24/7/365
May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
When required, shall work extra hours, holidays, weekends and other shifts
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
Working conditions are primarily outdoors
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions (i.e. oily, damp/wet surfaces)
Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperature variations (i.e. rainy and icy conditions), dirt, dust, fumes, vapor, smoke, unpleasant odors, hazardous chemicals, overhead power lines, poisonous plants, loud noises, insect and/or animal bites
Frequently moves equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, occasionally moves objects weighing up to 100 pounds
Will frequently communicate with co-workers; must be able to exchange accurate information
Constantly positions self to perform essential functions
Constantly operates tools and equipment
